Wire Line Outfit
Attached is the model I was looking at (but with monel).
Do you think this would be a nice addition to my trolling spread for wahoo (Main target), kings and grouper? Could I run a planer off a wire line then add a Mono leader into a spoon or lure? I was also thinking of running this with an inline sinker and a big yozuri bonita or diving (Mann 30+) lure. Should I just wait and get an electric reel? Thanks for the input guys. Kahi (Miami, FL) |

Guy have used wire line rigs for a long time, but most have given them up, opting more for a straight braid set up. That being said, one of the charter boats stacked up the meat one day a few years ago and all the hoo's came on a wire line rig. I would not use it for planers, but for pulling a bait out long, I think the sinking wire line holds it down in the water, without taking any action out of the bait.

Kahi my bro uses a set up like that in Florida. The water is not as deep where he trolls compared to northern states. Wire line, cigar weight, lure or strip bait on wire. It works for him. He fishes a touch north of you, running out of Stuart I believe.

I used to run a wireline rig - I used sevenstrand instead of monel though.
We used the inline weight and a 30 ft section of mono with a snap swivel at the end. It worked fairly well, but there are 3 major drawbacks to this rig in my opinion; 1) Corrosion on the reel spool - didn't matter how well you cleaned it, the spool is gonna get chewed up 2) The weight is downright dangerous swinging around. 3) Long handline to get the fish into gaff range - not to mention the weight swinging around. O-Sea-D did post a bridle rig for the trolling lead that looks interesting, and if I were gonna pull a wireline again, I'd probably follow suit. I've been running a Sniper setup for a while now (after trying downriggers, Z-Wings, Planers off of the downrigger, etc) - I'm hooked and we've not put it out and not caught fish - I'm sold. Oh yeah - almost forgot about the monel - kink it and you break it. Sevenstrand is no picnic either - it will chew up your hands with little broken wires... I will say that for fast trolling, it is the way to go - you can't run 10+ kts with a standard planer... Last edited by clt_capt; 02-26-2008 at 09:34 PM. |

I switched from monel to straight braid, but I know of a lot of captains that still pull wire lines. However, we have always used planers with ours on all the boats I've fished. We actually use both planers and trolling leads on wire lines with great results. This past Dec. I saw a wireline used with a planer/bridle wind on system and it caught most of our yellowfins that day out of Oregon Inlet. it was wire line all the way down to about a foot before the bridle. Then it was all mono. I got a couple of pics of it in action.

I can't thank you all enough for sharing your knowledge with me. I can honestly say that since I've joined this site, I've saved several thousand dollars on ill working set-ups (well, only to spend more on well working set-ups). So thank you guys. Kahi Miami, FL |

Kahi
Your wireline outfit above is highly deadly for HS Wahoo Trolling and Slow Grouper trolling...The Wahoo tournaments in the Bahamas allow a max of 2 wireline outfits in your spread. Straight wire on the reel is one way to go...The other way is to pack your reel with braid type line then put a top shot of wire...Our wirelines are set at the short corners (100' and 150')...Our wire top shots are set at 110' and 160'...When set, the connection w/ braid and wire is at least one crank on the spool. |
