Wonder how new those reels are, Penn has sent that model line to their Chinese vendor to be built. I wonder if this has anything to do with it or not, could be coincidence. I have not heard of any issues so far.

I had an early set loaned to me along with a set of VS... Pretty, good feeling but I was over the top disappointed by certain things. The new mounting studs for one. Here were these new beefy strong looking studs. Figured that would be a great improvement over the skinny ones they used to have. They were corrosion magnets and a few of them sheared inside of a month of Bahama work.
The kgs with graphite frame had issues as we cracked two of them with no exceptional pressure on them.
Thats a drawback to any graphite though I have not had it happen on my shimanos... Yet...
The owner of the boat I'm on has full Penn sets. The 70 vs series we have just got their first week of use. Though washed thoroughly each day. their mounting hardware in just a week looked like hell requiring dismantle, polish, lube and reassemble...
The gear boxes on both series are good. THe drags pretty good though they still get wet easier than Shimano despite claims of being more water resistant. Even running spray with them in the gunwales was enough to get em slippin and lockin a bit.
Still thats an over all review. I have a couple gls in my own kit that are similar and really can't find anything to bitch about...

I'm pretty sure they changed the graphite in the newer reels.
