Ocean City Reel Drag Washers?

Hi Folks,

I am new here but have a question I hope someone might be able to help with. I have really been impressed with some of the other posts on here.

I have some older Ocean City Model 112 reels that I use for bottom bouncing and trolling that I would like to rebuild or refurbish. The drag washers on these look pretty simple, just a simple sandwich, keyed, un-keyed(not metal), and keyed again. There is a fourth smaller washer that has a wave or bend to it, not sure if it is supposed to be like that but all of mine are.

Does anyone know if replacement washers or drag systems are available? These are really great old reels and have caught a ton of fish. I don't want to retire them but the drag on a couple of them is getting to the point where its all or none. I have had some success just cleaning and re-greasing them but replacing them seems like it would be the best route.

Hopefully Alan (alantani) will see this post... He's real good with this stuff. Look for his posts on tuning up various reels in the rod building, jigging, reels etc section of the site.

I think what you have is a star drag. That being the case you could probably find some similar sized drag washers from local tackle stores if not there is a place called smoothdrag.com. Measure up your existing drags and give them a call. If they cant get perfect matches to what you have, the old washers, some new washers could probably be trimmed up as Alan has done on occasion.

That washer that has the bend in it is probably a “spring" putting pressure on the drag stack.

One thing I recently learned .... be careful cleaning the side plates esp. if they are composite or plastic. The cleaner ( I used a carb cleaner to clean and de grease things) etched the side plates !!! Not a big deal just use caution when cleaning them up. Alan asked me to post up some pictures of the side plates ... I will soon

Thanks, I have seen some of Alan's posts and was hoping he would chime in. I appreciate the input. I have looked for similar washers locally but so far no luck.
Getting material to cut or shape sounds like a possibility but I would need to do that by trial and error.

what i typically do is find one that has the proper inside diameter and then cut down the outside diameter to fit. it only takes me a few minutes. unfortunately, that doesn't help you a bit!!!!

it you can pull the drag washers and get some dimensions for us, i can take a look and either match something up or cut something down for you. alan

Alan, Thanks. I'll be be servicing two of them this weekend, I did one last night and it really made a big improvement just cleaning and greasing the old washers.

I post a picture and the measurements when I get one torn down.

Hi all, Alan I took the two reels apart, realized I had nothing to measure the washers with accurately, so I cleaned them up and regreased them. Reassembled the reels and they they are as good as new. I will have to see how long they hold up. I have some pictures of them in various states of assembly and will post them once I find the cable for my camera.

These reels really are neat, considering how old they are they really have a lot of neat features, I love the built in handle wrench and the automatic way the reels disengage the free spool after a cast.

OK, I found my cable so I'll post my reel pics as promised. This is the down dirty version, nothing like Alan posts but you'll at least be able to see the reels apart and then finished.
Here is the Reel Handle wrench built in on some of the Ocean City Bay Caty reels.
