Buying Lead??

I'm just starting to get into making sinkers and whatnot.
But, I'm having a hard time finding lead online.
Where do you guys get your lead??
I guess shipping would kill me anyway
On Hilts molds it said go to a junk yard. Anyone ever do this??

Thanks for the input

I got about 2000lb from my brother he was rediong a hospital X-ray room and they are lined with lead so he brought it all home to me. I wouldnt but it, you are better off buying the sinkers already made.

I found tons at the local Dept. of Parks and Recreation in my old town. When lead water pipes were banned years ago, they still had them on a lot just sitting there. Well, after lots of axe swing and shovel blows...we had a truck full. A buddy of mine in TX did the same thing and found some as well.

Go around your town to the tire places. They'll have buckets of the lead tire weights sitting around.

They'll be oily, dirty, some wont be lead, all have those clips on them.

I take a propane crab cooker burner and a cast iron dutch oven. Get the flame going good and drop a bunch in the pot. Do this away from the house and don't let any water drip in the pot. I then use a cast iron ladle and put the lead in aluminum cans. The metal clips get put in a pile to the side and chucked when they cool off. When the lead hardens I peel the aluminum off. Whenever I feel like molding something I melt one cans worth(~8lbs.) in my electric lead meltin pot. Transfer to molds with a ladle.

it's all a giant pain in the ass, but with a weekends worth of melting you can get enough lead to last a long time.

The stuff will be dirty and have a bunch of floaters in it, but it's FREE

Good luck.

Lead is a reproductive toxin and will make your little fishies swim crooked. Treat it with respect and only melt outside. I wear a respirator, a bunch of clothes, safety glasses and welders gloves.

Check your local yellow pages for recycling centers. They will have lead in various forms for sale. The softest lead will be shower liners, xray room wall liners, lead pipe, ballast blocks or electrical cable shielding.

I have gotten about 1,500 lbs worth from my dad who is a printer. The company that he used to work for got rid of all of their old type set lead. Its actually more than I will ever need.

I actually cast about 20 or so of the soda/beer can ingots (different heights)that Dave talked about, only I put some hoops in them with some copper electrical wire for deep drop fishing.
They make great wieghts for dropping 600' into a current.
