Best 80lb rod?

Whats the best 80lb bent butt rod on the market?

What's the difference between a rod that is made by penn or shimano for $650, compared to a cape fear or metlon that is over $1200?

Whats the best bang for my buck?

dead, i would suggest, looking at a custom, when you start getting into the higher pound class, the prices get awfully close , meaning custom vs off the shelf. IMO

alot of the difference is the blank and /or components, till i took my rod buiding lessons from paul, i didn't know the differnce , now i sort of do. ie, aftco rollers, stuart rollers or winthrop, that can make atleast 200 dollars in differnce, tip, it an aftco, aftco shd, aftco shd with ball bearing, all these things make a difference.

with that in mind, that is why my suggestion to go to a reputable rod builder.

I used to work for winthrop. he make's real high quilty guides worth the money. I use j@b tackle www.jbtackle.com If you go that route make sure to get a titanium top. Melton does great work.

Grady's got that right..the custom "highend" rods. can be even cheaper then the "highend" shelf rods, the W/T roller guides are a great addition. as are the AA ti rollers.. if you want to discuss the differance i n more detail. feel free to call.

I agree, I would look into a custom rod from a reputable builder. I went to all custom rods for my tuna trolling rods, and it was the best money I ever spent. Got the rods customized for looks which is nice, but also they have a lot better action then a store bought rod. Melton rods are very nice as well, I have fished boats that had them. You can probably get a comparable or better rod built for the same or less which can be custom built to either match what you have now, or to look however you would like. I've found that custom built rods usually use the best components compared to a store bought rod. A store bought rod that may have similar components will cost you a lot more. I have never been a fan of Shimnao or Penn rods, they build reels, not rods. Ask around locally for a good rod builder. If you need one in NJ, I have a great builder where all my rods were done. His rods are fished on a lot of big name boats in my area.

I think the best poles you are going to get will be the stalker milleniom, I have 12 of them and they are great. They are made with calstar blanks and have afco everything. Check one out and you will not be disapointed.
