80 Stand-up rod ???

What has been the preference for a stand-up rod for 80W reels?

Do you feel these reels can be used on the typical stand-up rods?

I was recently in a store looking at a short, bent butt 50-130lb. class stand-up rod. When I explained I was thinking of putting an 80TW on it, I was told it would not work.

Any opinions?

Thanks,
VC

Do you think the short curved butt can securely hold the foot of the 80?
I think that may be what he was referring to when he said it would not work.
What butt did you use for the stand-ups you just made?
Thanks,
VC

Check out these rods by Dennis Braid. He puts 80s on them. I have fished these rods in North Carolina for the giants with Cabtain Brian from Extreme Measures. They are in my opnion the most superior stand up rod I have ever fished.

A lot of guys have gone to 70vs reels for this type of stand up, not quite the same type of line capacity, but it has a similar class drag and is suited for this type of fishing. It is a little lighter and narrower which makes them a little easier on the angler. For a stand up rod used with a reel that big, I'd recommend using a short bent butt, but that really depends on your personal preference.

I am just building 2 stand up 80's. Its common here in Australia to use them as we are up for a challenge. They are also using 130# stand up as well but my balls arent that big. I am putting tiagra 80's on mine, have a look at melton tackle for rods if you are not going to make them(they do have all the components) have some grander stand up's that are awesome rods. Aftco do a #4 short bent butt that suits the 80's beautifully.
hope this helps. Any questions pm me.

Hello VCinRI,
The photo is of one of those giants caught on one of my stand up 80's custom made rods here in NC back in December. (See the rod in the holder on the port side of the boat.)I'm not exactly sure what you mean by " won't work", but sounds like maybe that person didn't know what they were talking about. I would be glad to help you out with a custom, hand built rod for that reel. Contact me thru my website.
Tight lines, James
