    WTB Series 60 Detroit 825hp (2)

I am looking to buy a set of Detroit Diesel Series 60 engines with transmissions. I would also consider CAT 1025 hp. I am building a new boat, and also will be looking for helm chairs, fighting chair, generator, etc. Any help would be appreciated. I will be listing my current boat, a 48' Gillikin Custom for sale in the near future. Thanks.

    Engine selection

Sounds like you have the HP figured out. I believe after that, you may want to think hard about the weight to HP rating, tourque/rpm, and obviously cost comparison. I think I recall the MTU's are heavier then the other units in that catagory. Another thing to consider, is who in your area can service your units if you have a failure. and lastly, why not consider the MANN common rail?

As far as a chair is concerned, I don't know how that all started, but I'll chime in

    Thanks to everyone

I appreciate the help from everyone. Keep them coming, I am getting some good leads.

The two most recommended engines for this area (eastern NC) is either the Detroit Series 60, or Cats.

I don't really know which way to go, is it for speed, or economy. Looks like the Cats will give me 3-4 more knots speed at cruise, while the Series 60 will still give me 28-30 knot cruise. The Cats are around $50k more for the 200 hp more each side. Seems like a lot to pay for not much gain. But how will it effect resell value down the road? Is diesel going to be $4 a gallon, or is it going to $8???

    48' Gillikin

2000 48' Gillikin Custom Convertible. It has twin 435hp Volvo diesels,3200hrs, absolutely bulletproof. Some of the charter boats on Atlantic Beach have over 10,000hrs on them with Volvo diesels. All electronics replaced when I bought it Oct. '06 with dual display Furuno Navnets.

Inside it has a custom ash interior, with a single stateroom forward, which gives it lots of room in the head, galley, and salon. I had planned to replace the sofas with Flexsteel with storage drawers underneath, with built in beds.

This boat has a current cruise of 21.5-22 knots, with an incredible fuel burn. I can run to the Big Rock off Morehead City, 42 miles, fish all day, and average around 145-150 gallons.

I have just had the cockpit replaced due to a leak in one of the access covers, and installed a sea chest which allowed us to remove six thru hulls with scoops, and two transducers from the bottom. It is going back in the water this week, and I am hoping to see a 1.5-2 knot increase in cruise. I think a best case would be a new cruise at 23.5-24 knots with no increase in fuel burn.

There has been a lot of work done to this boat since I purchased it, and I am putting the info together to put it on the market. The new boat is still a year from completion, so I have been dragging my feet a little.

The last survey was for $550k, but in todays market, that is not likely. I also plan to market myself, and will be reasonable and realistic with a serious buyer. PM me if you have an interest. I do have several possible buyers waiting on me to complete the upgrades.
