I've been really happy with the Avet MX reels for kings. The rods I use are made by Chaos - http://www.chaosfishing.com/rods_det...sp?prod_id=144

But you can easily get many of the off the shelf brands and be very happy.

Shimano TLD-20s have also worked well - a friend I fish with is set up with TLDs on Star rods - very nice setup...

Are you going to be slow trolling? If so,I would suggest a 7' 12-20 lb. live bait rod with a high retrieve ratio reel(6.0/1). I personally don't like braid for king fishing. Not enough stretch. 20 lb. mono is all you need. If your going to be pulling hardware only, that set up should work fine.

The Penn Senator is definitely a classic solid reel.

It is not going to have the retrieve speed of the Avet or Shimanos.

I also prefer a lever drag over a star drag for trolling.

When I'm trolling for kings, we use small hooks and light drag. It is easier with lever drag to adjust it consistently - if you need to tighten up.

I would expect for live bait slow trolling, you would use the same type of king rigs with small hooks.

Kings are pretty well known to make a big run away from the boat initially, but I've seen just as many double back and head back to the boat. It really helps to have a fast retrieve when they are headed back to the boat.
