On the piers in NC, the most common setup is a 2 rod system.
The first rig is a heavy rod & reel with just a weight attached and it functions like a trolley - Your "fishing rig" is attached just like a kite rig - with release clips or rubberbands. it breaks away when the fish hits.

For live bait, you want to keep it flipping just on the surface

If the pier allows it, you can use a ballon float rig - only requires 1 rod. This rig consists of a balloon, a barrel swivel, a leader and hook. What makes this rig a great choice for King Mackerel is the balloon can hold the larger baits at the surface easily and you can adjust the balloon for the bait size. Just be sure when you tie the balloon to your main line that you tie it tightly so when the balloon breaks it does not become liter in the water.

I think most of the guys on Oceancrest use 30 lb. class reels and braid. If this is where most of your kingfishing will be done, the combo you're talking about should be fine. The reel may be a little slow, but it should work fine. I don't pier fish, but have friend that do, and 30w internationals and tiagra's is what alot of them use.

I haven't pier fished in a long time. Fished just about every pier in NC - a bunch aren't even around anymore

One thing you'll find is that many of the piers will charge you a bit extra to kingfish. and they usually only let a certain number of kingers on at a time.

You can try the shimano speed master - you can probably get a solid combo for under $300. Try All Tackle

    high speed reels

if you are okay with spending 200-300 on a live bait reel, you might want to check out the torium 30. 6.2:1 retrieve ratio i think. it retails right around 200. nothing wrong with the speedmaster, but if you are pier fishing line capacity is more of an issue, hence the bigger spool. also will hold higher levels of drag than the speedmaster, in case you hook a big shark and need to end it more quickly so you can get back to the matter at hand. just my two cents. let me know if you want me to ship you one.
