it's dangerous but cool when the Rolex dealer has your cell phone number to call when new stuff comes in.
But as was pointed out above, these things tend to appreciate, if bought right. My 20-year old stainless sub cost $1500, and was just appraised at $4k (I replaced the hands and face because it didn't glow anymore). It still keeps perfect time. I wish my 401K performed as well.
If you get hooked on Roli, plan on buying a watch winder to keep them running.

Thanks
for all the info so far. This weekend I looked at a few NEW Rolex's - Submariner, Yachtmaster, etc.. I tell you that I was actually surprised at how light the watches felt. I guess my thought was if I was spending 3k, 5k or 9k on a watch that it would feel a lot more solid and heavier on my wrist?
I'm still looking and I think I am leaning towards the two-tone Submariner that is 5 years old or newer. Like I said, I do not mind if it is not mint b/c I will be wearing everyday and I am pretty rough on my watches. Plus, I do not want to go overboard on my first Rolex - I saw a Daytona at the store new for 13k!
Thanks again for all of the info so far.

Consider buying a 'certified pre-owned' one from a Rolex dealer. You'll know it's real and get a good deal. 2 of my Rolex are CPO watches - you can find some good deals these days (call Anthony at JR Dunn in Lighthouse Point, FL - tell him Bill Lindsey sent you. he will take Very Good care of you.)
