Unless I misread the picture, the line at the end of gaff head leads me to believe that is the end that inserts into the handle. If I see it correctly, looking at the tape as reference, the point appears to reach way up the handle. If the point is two feet up the handle, it stands to reason that you would need to reach two feet past the desired point of entry. Not trying to be smart, but with most heads utilizing the point near the end of the handle, you need to be within the sum of gaff length and your physical reach. If, again, unless I misread the picture, the point appears to be approximately two feet closer to the mate, effectively reducing the above example.
