    Hey Jer,

Thanks for the compliment on the reels! Fly reels are fairly simply mechanisms. 1/1 ratio is about as simple as it gets. It's a matter of making the reels simple yet functional in the salt. By using only 6061 barstock aluminum for the spool and frame (Double anodized) , Only stainless steal internals, and carbon fiber for the drag surface it is easily acomplished. No plastic parts whatsoever...

    Thanks again,

    Tight lines, Bob

I just bought a St. Croix reel and could not be more disappointed in it....i clean it after every outing and it still gives me troubles. I wish i had seen this like a month ago...i needed a 9 weight. I love the looks of your reel and functionality looks awesome! If i can find the $ i might be giving you a call....

    Hey Capefisherman,

Thanks for the kudos on the reels. Much appreciated. Sorry to hear that the St. Croix reel isn't doing it's job. What part of the reel is causing the problem? Whats the drag surface in that reel?? Let me know the model and I might be able to figure out what you need to do to make it a little more reliable. Hate to see you lose the fish of a lifetime because of a reel problem.

From my experience with reels over the year I have discover this:

The reel needs to be completely sealed (No amount of water is acceptable. not even one drop) (Charlton, Mako)

Or the reel needs to be completely open. If water and grit can get in easily it can also leave easily. (Tibor, Abel)

I personally prefer the unsealed. It's pretty difficult to seal something that has to move. However I am tinkering with a generation II reel that is sealed. Early test on it failed and I went back to the drawing board with the internal design.

Let me know exactly what reel you have. Maybe I'll have an idea for you.

    Tight lines, Bob

    Thanks!

Yep I build my own line of rods as well under the same name "Colton" Named after my son.

Matter of fact I just finished a production of near 900 rods from 4#-10# Getting ready for Christmas as well as the show season.

All with the exception of the 4 are fast action. All are 4 piece and come with an extra tip section, bag, and travel tube. Lifetime warranty as well.

Here is the link to a special I have running on the bass barn

Its the St. Croix Legend Ultra 9wt reel. The problems I am having seems to be dealing with the drag disc. I like your idea about keeping everything open, seems that if air can dry it, it will be better off than trapping that salt water in there. They have a drag cap over the entire gear area which is not sealed nor is it open. So salt can get in but cant get out unless you take the cap off and clean it EVERY time...which i do, before I spray it with cleaner.

    Any suggestions?

    Also,
Im going to get an opportunity to float the middle fork of the salmon river this summer so I'm prob. going to be looking at a 4wt or so. Got any pictures of yours? Ever do any combo deals?

    Thanks,
    CFM
