Some people may remember buying this book when Capt Jo Franck was dying back in 2005 and a plea went out for funds to help him and his wife in their battle against his cancer. Written by his wife, Greet Wouters, the book focuses on the development of the big-game fishing in the Azores over the years, and finishes with an accurate appraisal of the then current players on the scene.

"CLOSE TO THE SURFACE" is a large coffee-table size book with photos and recollections of the last 50 years fishing in the Azores. Liberally sprinkled with anecdotes and illustrations, it will lead the reader into a collection of wild tales and broken tackle : as a result of the circumstances surrounding its publication the book is a collector's item. The original asking price was over $60.

Some of the colour photographs were specifically commissioned for the book and cannot be found elsewhere.

I have three copies left from the 200 or so I bought for re-sale in those dark days. I doubt you will find it for sale anywhere else. Great gift for this Christmas (if I can get it to you in time !).
