This boat can be used for fishing and cruising offshore, with an added measure of seaworthiness provided by its unsinkable design, high freeboard, self-bailing cockpit, and ability to run fast in moderately rough water. Scout boats are very well built. They are built entirely of rot-proof fiberglass and composite coring materials....no balsa or any other kind of wood is used structurally. One unique characteristic of Scout..s design is that the hull stringers continue past the transom to the outboard bracket, so the main hull structure directly absorbs the engine..s weight, torque and thrust. Another unique design feature is the hull-to-deck joint, which different than a shoe-box joint....the deck fits inside the hull part, and the joint is continuously bonded together using methacrylate adhesive. All Scouts up to 30 ft. are built with level flotation, which means they will not sink if holed and will float level at their damaged waterline. Transom edges are hand finished at the hull-to-deck joints rather than using the more common metal or plastic cap cover to hide an unfinished joint. The Scout 262 Abaco Walkaround..s modified vee bottom has a sharp entry transitioning to 21? of deadrise at the transom. Negative deadrise chine flats widen at the stern for added lift and form stability. The Scout 262 Abaco Walkaround offers a long list of standard equipment for the angler, including a lighted livewell, 4 rod racks and 2 rod holders per side, an insulated fish or ice box, tackle drawers, a raw water washdown, transom drawers port and starboard and a freshwater shower. Coaming bolsters make leaning against the gunwale easier on the legs. Pop-up cleats remove a number of potential snagging hazards. Cruising aspects aren..t ignored, either, with an easily adjusted fold-down transom seat providing multi-purpose functionality, and a cockpit coaming height of 27 in., a toe kick and good nonskid provides a safe environment for the whole family. Scout goes the extra mile and provides a fuel tank removal hatch in the deck for tank replacement....this detail will be appreciated by both those doing the work and those paying for it. Aft to port is a small boarding ladder platform with a 3-step ladder that folds flush with the teak-and-holly-covered deck. A grab rail makes climbing up the ladder easier. A step on each side leads up to the sidedeck and forward, with an 18-in. high, ruggedly built stainless steel bowrailing that starts at the cockpit and leads forward to the pulpit. Structurally and aesthetically, the bowrailing also benefits from Scout..s attention to detail with a blind-bolted design hiding the deck fasteners and providing a clean look. Very effective sand grit nonskid forward looks good and holds well under foot. The comfortably proportioned, 19 1/2 in.-wide companionway leads down to the pleasantly finished cabin, where headroom tops out at a modest 69 in. at the entrance. The 1-piece fiberglass pan, or cabin foundation, will make cleanup a snap, while also contributing to the boat..s structural integrity. The roomy enclosed head is immediately to starboard, and it comes with a porcelain toilet with holding tanks and an overboard discharge pump, as well as a sink with lift-out spigot for double duty as a shower nozzle. Immediately to port is a single berth that projects aft under the bridgedeck....this berth, just aft of the galley, is 75.. x 24,.. a small single that will be great for one of the children. The split galley configuration has a countertop with sink to port, and a refrigerator with a small countertop above opposite to starboard. Forward is the master berth, and it..s actually big enough to sleep on with the length along the hull ranging from 76 to 80 in., and the width about 46 in. at the widest point. This berth is also easy to get in and out of, with a raised platform to port, and there..s more storage room below. A step leads up to the bridgedeck, with a large storage compartment and battery switches on centerline below a deck hatch. An insulated livewell and a storage box are built in below the port and starboard seats. To port is a pedestal seat with a raised platform just forward. Also provided to port up on the dash is a nifty fold-down lunch tray with cup holders built in....the tray even has a gasket to help prevent rattling when closed. Opposite to starboard is the helm, and nowhere on any boat less than 30 ft. is one likely to find more room for flush-mounted electronics. Although the electronics flat is high, visibility ahead is very good, even when seated, and even when the boat is coming up on plane. Scout provides a fold-down 6-in.-high platform at the helm to accommodate passengers of different heights. There..s also a 1/4-in. deck drain at the helm in the seat foundation..s inside corner....at this size it will clog easily, and the owners would be better served by a 1.5-in. line for that reason. The seated position is very comfortable, as is the reach to the wheel and engine controls. The T-top is tan colored on its bottom side, which will reduce instrument reflection and glare during night time running. Independent Test Drive Report ..The test ride consisted of a 6-in. chop and crossing occasional wakes. Though the hull was not challenged, it sliced through the light chop with a nonchalance that suggested its potential as a rough-water sea boat offshore. Coming up on plane, sightlines to the horizon never came close to being obscured by the bow, even without using the tabs. In a hard, high-speed turn, the boat handled exceptionally well, banking just right for the turn rate, and never threatened to go out of control as some similar boats do with excessive heel. In fact, this boat handles as well as any walkaround, and much better than most in terms of controllability and predictability. The boat feels very solid, in general, at high speed.... the steering wasn..t especially tight at 5 turns lock to lock, but it was responsive enough at high speed, though centering the engines after being in a high-speed turn takes a lot of effort, pointing to power steering as an appropriate solution. Low-speed maneuvering dockside is when all those turns will be bothersome. With the engines trimmed out to 3.5 of 5 on the engine trim indicator, the boat started to porpoise at 4500 rpm and stopped at 5500 rpm, and also stopped doing so with engine trim brought in to 2.5. Dropping the trim tabs did very little to reduce porpoising. With the two 150-hp Yamahas running at full bore, the GPS read just shy of 50 mph. Running at a comfortable 4500 rpm cruise, the boat made 36 mph...
