Temple fork rods are priced nice, but you get what you pay for. The components are cheap and will rust. They really can't handle salt as well as some other brands. I have two and still fish them, they still catch fish, and take abuse. Yeah, they're heavier than more expensive rods, but they still catch fish.
If you're willing to take an IOU from santa, ride up to TieFest on Feb 16th on Kent Island and take the opportunity to cast a number of different rods, and talk to some VERY VERY VERY experienced folks.
My new favorite rod is a St. Croix Avid blank that was put together by Bill O'Brien @ Shore Tackle in Grasonville. It's an 8 wt and is my go to rod for anything inshore. Yes it was expensive, but you'll learn, you get what you pay for, and sometimes it's worth the extra expense.
Huck fin caught plenty of fish with a bambo stick and a string.
