    What rod?

Not saying I want to run out buy another fly rod when I am just barley a step above " doesn't suck completley" at fly fishing, but . . .

If someone wanted to try to catch a 50lb cobia, or a big black drum on the fly, what wt rod would be required?

I'm going to assume that a butt ton of backing would be required as well. We have a pretty cool summer fishery in the southern bay. 45+ inch black drum school up around the islands of the CBBT and are often on the surface, and there is always a chance of seeing a cobia cruising on top.

Think it would be pretty cool to catch on mf those on the fly.

    Craig,
You can do most of that on a 10wt with a good reel.

12wts are tarpon, sails, and tuna..

14wts are pacific sails and big tuna

Drum and cobia are taken with regularity down your way on 9 and 10wts... add sharks to the list too.. here are some pics from my webiste..

All 9 and 10 wts.... just get a good reel bud..
Black drum are no problem on an 8wt..

Nice pics!!!! Thanks for the replies guys.

gotta fly - I think that is one of my character defects. When I find something I think is interesting or want to learn I tend to totally emerse in it. Sometimes that is a bad thing. But I think I will be safe with the fly fishing. It's all fishsalmons fault. We'll get to talking and he just gets me all worked up and chompiong at the bit to go fishing.

OMC - Thanks. Maybe you can come down this summer. I'm sure I can put you on a big black drum and possibly a cobia.

Uh... mahi and sharks under 4ft sure.. I've caught big albies, monster blues.. big stripers.. you name it on that reel.. It can stop anything Jake.. only limited by how fast it will pick up line. It isn't a true large arbor... fill it with backing..

Craig...just give me and Sikorski a day and we'll be down

    OMC,
Between Craig's big boat and my Key Largo 196 - let us know when you and Dave can come down and I promise if at all possible we will make it fit.
