When a big ole sow Trout hits you MirrOlure, drag screams, rods bend and she will wallow on the top before she goes down and digs all the way to the boat. You gotta love the first Ker-thump of her tail when she takes your lure and digs away from you.
If you think the hunt for Red Drum it tuff...meet ye ole Trout, the elusive of the elusive in the inshore fishes. Hide all summer, disappear in the spring, only to be found by a small few the seek out its haunts. Red Drum are more predictable and less elusive than the Speckle Trout, making the hunt tougher and more exciting.
As far as table fair, the Trout has it over the Red Drum by miles, better texture and taste. Red Drum get amnesty from me all the time, Speckle Trout are not so lucky and get amnesty on rare occasions...

i have no idea how they suck it under so slick, you hear almost the sound of a menhaden tail flip and then bang, fish on..

Any Trout for me - I release all the Reds I catch, Speck are not so lucky ........ ICM
Actually I am not Billy. The drum is a bottom feeder with a mouth on the underside. They are no doubt exciting when they blow up on a topwater but mostly because they are so sloppy going after it. The trout makes a living hunting in the water column and is a beautiful top water bite.
Like Lee said the fall in our area belongs to the speck.
