you double the number then subtract a number to get the strength (lb test) you can just you mono too the X is more just to confuse ya when your new. truth is i do know what the hell it is off hand. hope this helps ,rather than confuse.![]()
thanks flies only.. what number do you subtract by and do you always use tippet?
Que Phsycho!! I looked up the answert to your questuoin and I will not even attempt to try to explain it to you. That is a very good question though.
Go to www.Flyanglersonline and look under the articles "fly fishing 101, part 6,
Leaders and tippets. It was very educational, now I know why peaple tye all those knots! You guys coming down this year?
It varies by brand and such, but you take the number....let's say 5x and subtract it from 11. So 5x is 6lb. test, or about that.
Different brands are measured in lbs, kg, and are different diameters for the same test, so one 5x won't be the same as the next 5x, but it should be close.

do you attach the tippet to the fly or the leader?
on the igfa site it only shows records down to 2lb. does this mean in saltwater fly fishing tippets 9x and under are used..?help!
A tippet(class tippet) is the weakest link of the leader. Typically it's the tip, unless you have a shock/bite tippet.
I use a straight 20 lb. flouro leader/tippet. One piece maybe 4 ft. long.
I also use a tapered leader for some applications.
If you're talking IGFA rules, your bite tippet can be no more than 12" nor can the class tippet.
That's about all I know off the top of my head for rules and the details.
So the fly can be attached to the tippet, or the shock tippet, depending on the fish you're chasing.
