www.pierandsurf.com those guys are PRO's.
Where does he fish? What is he fishing for? Spinning or conventional? Whats your budget?
I can probably point you in the right direction if you answer these questions.

I use a green machine
Shimano has a nice reel that I use for surf fishing and cast a mile with it. It is the Spheros with a waterproof drag system so your gears inside stay nice and clean. A real workhorse and pretty smooth with strong bearings and gears. I really like mine.

yeah thats a good spinner. The Daiwa Emblem Surf models tend to cast a little farther in the right hands, but if this guy is just getting started he probably won't see much difference. As far as casting reels, there's a ton of options out there, just depends on the budget and the target.

Sit down Shut up And fish
Its not for anything serious. Just fishing from time to time on the beach for bottom fish and such. I got the spheros, thanks.

I think you made a great choice. Hope you and your friend catch a bunch!!! That reel will last you many years as long as you rinse it off after every use. My Spheros has been dunked and still works like a champ.

I like using the ol' trusty Abu Garcias for surf fishing. They can handle good loads of fishing line, have a good break, you can cast a mile and they are tuff, rugged. However they are baitcasting reels and not everyone like those. Shimano or Penn spinning reels are second choice.
