I will add another question: Are they only used for surf fishing?

I've seen a picture in a brazilian magazine of a guy using a supermarket basket as his stripping basket... I guess its not easy to find a real stripping basket for sale here.

I'm still learning. had a guy out a couple weeks ago and he wore one but it looked like alot of trouble. The TV gurus, Jose' W, Mark Sosin and Flip Pallot never semm to use one they just pick the line up off the water. I can see maybe using one in the surf. Looks like anything would work, laundry basket bread tray etc, especially if your casting from a boat deck like on a cc. Low profile so the boat blocks the wind.

I woudn't go out without one. I use a Pleskunas stripping barrel. Very expensive. Over $200 shipped.

However, before I bought that from Stan I used this :

Fiskars now makes a colapsable (spelling?) leaf basket with a poly bottom. I believe its called the "kangaroo" What I do is take a 1/2 inch piece of plywood and cut out a disc , sand it and put a few layers of marine grade polyurathane on it. Drill small holes through the disc so that you cand push zip ties through them and they will be snug. Cut off the zip ties at an angle leaving them about three inches high from the bottom. Place the disc in the fiskars basket and you are ready to go. Personally I prefer this over my Pleskunas barrel because you can break it down and get it out of the way.

Somewhere online there is a photo by photo instruction for this. I'll see if I can find it for you.

    Tight lines, Bob

There are a lot of different ones on the market. I bought one years ago and it is actually a basket that looks like it came from a market. It is bigger than most and doen't hold water. I like it and it work it. It has the cones in it and works very well. I use it on surf, sods, and jetties. In the boat I rarely use it. My boat is very fly friendly with not much to catch on and has a lip around the edge to prevent line from blowing off the deck. Only use in boat once in awhile with extreme wind conditions.

I would say try ones that others have and see what you like.

Easy to make a simple one and there are many ways. It is a must have when fishing off the land.

    Jake,
A lot of times when you see the guys on TV they are fishing from flats style boats. Those flats boats are a far cry from the reality of the vessels we fish from.
Line will get caught on everything. Leaf baskets are a cheap way to make your own. I get a pop up leaf basket and get some 1" clear tubing. Load it up with pebbles and line the bottom.. around the diameter. That's enough weight so it won't blow away.
Get some ply wood... cut a circle so it fits snug on the bottom below the tubing. Tie some weedwhacker cord every few inches on the bottom.. drill holes for cord..
Bingo.. homemade basket for like $15.
It's nice.. line will get cut and fish will be lost if you don't use a basket. Plus you can just throw your rod with line piled up in the basket as you go from spot to spot. Once you get there... you are ready to go lines already stripped out and neat!!

From the beach... yes you need one too.. grocery store baskets (the little ones) are good.. make sure whatever you get.. it's large enough to catch the line and it drains.. you don't want to be in the surf with an extra 30lbs of water on your hip...

I was at an LLBean outlet last weekend and found a packable mesh stripping basket for on sale for $9. Figured that was tough to beat. Used it for the first time last night while wading, definitely easier than trying to manage all the line that has been pulled down current.
