So So start to the week

Catching fish but all small stuff.

Tuesday night Peter and I were going to fish the Point and last minute decided to go out in the boat instead. Found small blues at the end of the inlet smashing baitfish on the surface. Small Clousers and jiggies were being taken good. Put on some larger flies to try to get away from the blues but had no luck. Move to the back with dead low water and no tide and as it started moving we got one small weakie, one small striper and some sea herring. Could see fish in the light shadows but they were very fussy. We had a hard time getting them to take anything real good.

Was out with charter this morning at 5:30 a.m. Beautiful morning and still a lot of tide to go out. Again at the inlet it was wall to wall blues chasing bait on the surface. It was a no brainer for about an hour and a half. Charter was a freshwater mountain stream fly fisherman and was enjoying every fish he got. Lost count as he would catch on just about every third cast. Did go through about 7 flies that got chewed up.

Tried the beach front to get away from the blues and found bait and more of the small blues there. Water was very dirty from the high surf from yesterday and with still big waves we didn't work it too long. Didn't want to surf the boat in on the beach.

Tried, bigger flies to get away from the blues and tried north of the inlet and the inside walls with only more blues to show for our efforts. It was an all small blue day, but charter was happy.

More So So action. Had a beautiful morning and got out with early. Husband fishing with fly and wife with spinning. With the tide only about half out I decide to try the back bay looking for stripers. Only got blues from small to the size in the picture below.

Topwater popper popper worked well. Had a few bass hit the plugs but missed them. For the husband and white and green clouser was working for the blues.

Hooked two big rays on the front of the wings. Had us all excited for a while. Ended up cutting them off to avoid trying to remove the fly and getting anyone hurt.

Moved to the inlet only to find tons of bait all along the rocks with a small blue here and there. Went down the beach towards the point looking for bird play. Found none and came back to the inside of the rocks as the lady angler was not feel good with the wave and swell action. Just tons of bait everywhere, just nothing feeding on it, or maybe they are feeding all night.

Another so so day. No fly fishing today. Father and son out with limited casting skills. Left the dock pretty late, around 6:30. Not use to seeing the sun when I go out in the morning. Tried the inlet first on the outgoing. Water very dirty brown looking and decent swell still from yesterday. Missed a couple of small blues trolling small plugs. Couldn't work the rocks because of casting skills.

Plan B went to the back bay where flats drain off and picked a couple of blues on swimming plugs. Water was very brown with very little activity.

Went to plan C. Clam bellies and clam anchored up. Had non stop action for father and son. Mostly sand shards. Lost count we caught so many. Also had a mix of sea bass, some nice croakers and one striper. I could not bait hooks fast enought to put much chum out.

They both had a great time and enjoyed the fast action.

Week ended with tough fishing. Found that same dirty water tonight as the last time I was out. Was going to fish the beach at the point. Buddy fished there last night and it was slow and he decided to watch golf instead of fish with me tonight. (Couch pototoes can't catch fish)

Decided to try the boat even with storms on the radar a couple of hours away. Found nice conditions with a light wind on the back bay flats, but the water was warm. 74 to 78 degrees and super ugly brown. Saw lots of rays and bait. Got small blue on popping plug and one on the fly.

It started to look more threatening so I decided to do look for cooler, cleaner water in areas that I never fish closer to the dock. Found a couple of spots with 72 degree water, catching 6 on popping plug and 2 on pink/white deceiver in shallow area that I ride by all the time and have never tried. All small fish. The smallest was 15 1/2 inches and the biggest 20 inches.

Had one more spot I wanted to try but the wind kicked up and it started to rain and they were talking on the weather radio about possible thunderstorm activity. Not too bad for 2 1/2 hour trip.
