    In-Shore Billfish report...

Ok...not your typical Billfish, but, as the saying goes, “when in Rome.” Spring time in Oklahoma brings the annual Spoonbill season, and Oklahoma is fortunate to have one of the healthiest Spoonbill populations anywhere in the US. One of the more heavily populated area is in Grand Lake in NE Oklahoma, where fish can tip the scales at over 100 lbs. Here are a few early season catches.

Lee...most are catch/release or turned into the DNR for studies. Apparently the roe is very tasty, and it's the roe that lead to the commercial over harvesting issues in the past. I do know that they have no bones, and the meat is white and flakey. I can tell you this...I'm going to give it a try when I get one...little Old Bay sprinkled on top and you'd be good to go.

Unique critters...filter feeders, they aren't caught, they are snagged. Most guy's are using surf rods...heavy weight and a barbless treble hook casting across the river. State record was caught last year...134 lbs.

Can't wait to try out the new rod...if I can just get some time away from the drama caused by Mr. Gadhafi I'll try out the "snaggin'" thing.
