Question Shell Point/Little harbor Shark Fishing (florida)

I would like some help in my rigging for sharks and any advice on catching various other species around the Little Harbor area. I fish here very often and would also like some help in choosing my pole and reel.

We have a wide variety of sharks in the near shore waters near Ft. Myers. Black tips, which run from about three feet long to over five are one of the most common. They are great sport on light tackle and can be caught on live or dead bait. Next on the list of the toothy critters are the bull sharks and they are found in the bays as well as near shore. During the tarpon run, many sharks including bull sharks will follow the migrating tarpon and feed on the smaller or weaker fish. I have had one big tarpon cut in half while on the line and have cut the line on several other fish when they were being chased by sharks. Another tarpon eater is the hammerhead which get really big. I have had eight foot long hammerheads on to the boat and seen larger ones free swimming. We fish for bulls, hammerheads, and other sharks primarily using cut baits on the bottom. My favorite place to do this is in the passes down in the Ten Thousand Islands.

I know that the big sharks follow the tarpon up to Boca Grande and I guess you can target them all the way up to Tampa too. Let me know what other information I can provide or just give me a call at 239-948-9702. Early evenings are best since I am on the water most days.

report from Fort Myers to sarasota

FLORIDA FISHING REPORT FOR THE WEEK ENDING 04/17/10

For the sharks light tackle or at least no heavier than 20-30 pound would be the most fun. The sharks mentioned in the 1st reply are not considered edible except amybe the blacktip so it is catch and release for fun.I have never used circle hooks for sharks but I am sure they would work well in a catch and release inshore fishery.

Deep C on Mako fishing but it is applicable to other species
    MAKO 101 !!!

HOW DO YOU "RIG" FOR SHARKS?

I agree with Jack on tackle selection. I would suggest heavy spin tackle. Either shimano 6500 bait runners loaded with 20 lb or maybe step up to say a penn 9500ss with thirty. I tie a short double line using a bimini twist then using a double uni knot add a "wind on" section of 60 pound leader. Business end gets about three feet of #7 wire with a 7/0 hook and the other end of the wire gets a 150 pound swivel or snap swivel...
Mullet chunks or perhaps a snapper head seems to be a good choice for bait. You can chum along channel edges and fan out a few baits to improve odds.

In places where you have tarpon ther are big slob sharks. For them you need to go with a 5-10pound jack for bait and up your tackle to 80lb class. Something like an old penn 9/0 senator will do or you can up the game to an 80 international or 50wide shimano.

    Question Reel of choice

I now am on the lookout for a reel that can cast a good distance on the 12' uglystick and hold plenty of line. for the moment i have a shakespear platinum that only holds 155 yds of 25 lb line.

Shimano 6500 or penn 9500ss... Okuma makes some less expensive. You want at least 270 of 20 capacity... Preferably more...
