Same deal as last time.. Only difference was the appearance of much larger bait. Some of the silversides were of the jumbo variety. You know those ones that get like 5 inches long? Man... these guys were fat. I think it brought a better grade of fish.
The bad part of the story... the last part of high tide was the weakest. It just kinda stalled for a few hours. Couldn't get the right drift.. nothing was really moving. But, once the outgoing started, we began catching fairly well. Here a two of the nicer fish. First one went a little over 4lbs... this is a trip on the fly.
I didn't get anything big this time out. Every one I caught was around 17 to 18 inches. Those two were pigs.... But, the guys that caught them are two of my best buds. Both of those fluke were personal bests for them. The one LARGE made my buddies summer. It isn't exactly easy getting your hands around a fluke that size in 2ft of moving water. He did good though...
You know you are welcome anytime Dave.. that goes for anyone that wants to try this novelty. We have about 2 months of good consistent fishing left. Anyone who wants to go... just let me know and we can work something out. No super secret stuff... just hard core fly fishing, reading water....and sight casting to nice fluke!!!
Man, nice fish. I would trade off a couple of stripers anyday for a few fluke on the flyrod. Most of the ones I get are throwbacks and there aren't that many. You have caught more than I do in a whole season and so many nice ones. That is a terrific spot you have there. Nothing like some fresh fluke for the dinner table too.
My buddy snapped a few pics during our trip. Here
s one of yours truly hooked up. Even the smaller 18 inchers put a serious bend in an 8wt. That's a sage xp he's doubling up... and it was a little guy!!
Those dunes might help you get to the spot Ray.
Seriously Ray... if you ever have a time when you don't have a charter and can get to Lewes.. I'll pick ya up and show you around. Some days are better than others but I've only been skunked once. That was the first time I tried it.
Great pic Tony. I'm gonna be at the beach from thursday to sunday and if the weather offshore is nasty I'll be trying for some flatties. Let me know if you are gonna sneak down at all.
