i have a fresh water reel. it held up fine last season. i am just not sure if it will make it another season. is their any kind of spray or something that would make it more resistant against salt water?

Saltwater is tough on all reels whether for salt or freshwater. Best you can do is rinse them after every use. Take the line off once in awhile and clean salt off the spool and lubricate. Many finishes pit and peel off. I have a few older reels that still work great mechanically but look a bit ugly on the outside. I use them when I fish rock jetties and the beach. I don't have to worry about scrapes and sand damage.
Good quaility reels usually hold up better as many are cut from metal and polished. There are others that are painted and the finish is super strong. Guess you only get what you pay for.
I agree with ray.
After a day in the salt I'll dunk my reels in a bucket with fresh water and make sure they're rinsed well.
Spraying with a hose will push the salt into the line and can cause trouble down the road.
I clean my lines when the spirit moves me with dish soap and warm water.
I noticed the guys on the long range boat I was on last week were using salt-x to spray on their reels after a day of fishing. Never used the stuff, but I hear it does a number on salt corrosion.

Does it matter if you rinse off your reel in warm or cold water? Also are you supposed to lock up the drag on a spinning or conventional rod so you dont push more salt into it or does it not make a difference
Hey.... you two guys.. Jake and PMC .... I have an 8wt you can have.
It's a finnor fr8.. retail is about $650. But, I've had it for about 15 years. It is beaten up but still works well. Finnor has since been bought and sold 3 times and the newest owner (zebco) isn't honoring warranty work. The frame has some cuts in it. They are located on the arm that connects the spool to the frame. Most likely from the way I strip line out... but none the less.. it really pisses me off that it happened. That's really the only issue. They said it would cost me $200 to repair it.. but.. I'm on a few pro staff programs and I can get brand new reels of the same quality for less than that.
So... if you want it and will kinda share it when you two go fishing together, I'll mail it to you. Has one spare spool in black... reel and other spool is gold I'd rather give it to you guys than sell it for peanuts on ebay.
That reel can stop a u-boat. More cork that just about any other reel. Clean it off well if you use it on the beach. Sand in the cork will scratch the frame..
Anyway... let me know dudes.. Like I said.. I'd rather see two good kids with it than some ebay putz. Reel and spare spool will have 30lb backing..
Free only to you two characters.... and only if you promise when you grow up and can afford this junk on your own.. that you try to do the same for some kid who just wants to get into the sport...
Let me know...
I always lock down my drag when we're under way or when I'm spraying down my reels at the end of the day, then when I'm done and I'm putting them away I put the clickers on and everything goes into free spool. I read somewhere that this will help to make the drag last longer. I can't say that I have anything to compare it to, but I can say that we haven't had a single problem with salt corrosion getting in and messing things up.
na man it really doesnt matter weather you rinse them off with hot or cold, just as long as they get rinsed off because if not....... corosion..... and that is not a good thing you want for your reels.its happened to me before and it really sucks because than the reels turn to crap. oh by the way nice fish man thats the biggest ive evr seen.oh yeah lock the drag up and than loosten it back up when putting it away.
