    Report from Cape May Point

Fly fishing buddy and I decided to hit Cape May Point tonight with the incoming tide. Beautiful night and sunset. Beach was crowded and we had to watch our backcast all night with all the people walking up and down the beach. I was using intermediate and Chart/White clouser. Had a fair number of hits and got 4 weakies two of keeper size just barely and one throwback fluke.

Peter was using a floating line and was having a hard time getting a hit. Water wasn't that deep and was a bit murky but that was the only difference we could see.

Saw others getting a few weakies and fluke on pink rubber baits on jig heads. Action was not hot like the weeks before but not bad.

Peter and I hit Cape May Point again tonight and met up with Paul from the SJCFA club. Water was very dirty and was cleaning up a bit as the tide came in. Again it was a pain with all the people in your backcast zone. Had to move a couple of times with people clueless coming up behind us. Paul had a weakie while he was with us and I had a small fluke. We were using Chart/white clousers. We had a few hits, but it was plain slow.

Saw a few fish caught by guys with pink rubber baits on jig heads and one on bait. It was slow over all. It was another beautiful night and sunset.

Cancelled fly charter for this morning. We got to the dock around 5:00 a.m. and the wind was blowing around 20 mph out of the east with gusts higher. With low tide and no water in the back I had planned on working the beach front and inlet. Wind would of make life difficult and with both fly anglers not use to the heavier weight rods it would of been no fun for them.

Since I was up. Decided to drive over to Cape May Point (the lee shore) and fly fish the beach there. Water looked clean, with some bait but the fishing was slow. Had around 8 hits, landing 2 small keeper size weakies that I threw back. Bait guys on the end of the rocks were catching croakers. With the weekend there was a ton of guys fishing but action was slow for the number of guys. Even some of the regulars using pink jig heads were having a slow morning.

Wind still blowing and it looks like it will be an all day wind.

Dismal day at the shore. Strong wind out of the northeast and a little drizzle here and there. No place to hide from the wind with a so so tide so I went to Cape May Point where I could have the wind to my back. Met John Mohres from the fly club there. He was using as spinrod. I harrassed him enough that he said he would use it the next time.

Started out very slow. Saw small blues and weakies along with sea herring jumping and chasing very small inch and a quarter bay anchovies in the rip line off the end of the jetty. Neither of us could get them to hit, nor anyone else. I worked down the beach getting a small keeper weakie and a 8 inch blue and John stayed put and got a 18 to 20 inch striper.

We ended up fishing side by side for a while and I ended up getting a keeper fluke 16 3/4 inches, on a pink/white deceiever, which I kept and a small weakie on a small clouser.

Just as it was getting pretty dark I got another small weakie and shortly there after a little rally with 4 more weakies in quick order, with one of keeper size. Then it was dead.

Didn't see much caught by others. I had problably the best night including the bait guys that I saw which doesn't say much about the fishing. On the plus side there is baitfish everywhere and one fellow said last night and this morning there was schoolie size bass there but tonight Johns was the only one.

Peter and I went over to Cape May Point this evening instead of fighting the wind in the boat. Was honking all day and still is. Started slow. First hour and a half we had 1 hit between us. Just like last night right as the sun was going down the fish turned on. Peter using a sinking line got 3 short fluke (one was so close) and 1 weakie. I had 4 small weakies and a small throwback fluke using intermediate. With the wind we had to wear sweatshirts and it felt good to wade in the water for warmth.

Gail warnings for tomorrow so we figured this might hold us over till we can fish again. Not going to be a fun weekend.

Ray, Hold on to your fly rod...gusts to 67MPH here now. Also you will need a full body comdmon to stay dry. Hope all my Red Drum babys found a calm place to go. Fishing for them has been so good the last week or so.

Hope you guys to the south weather out this storm. Just got back from checking the boat and the inter harbor has 3 footers plus with the gale force winds. Toughest week of the summer charter wise. Canceled 4 trips so far this week with people just down on vacation for the week and this weekends trips look like they are gone too. We are suppose to get 4 to 6 inches of rain and that will change the salt levels in the back, make the water a weird color and do who know what to the fishing.

Good old fly tying weather, while watching Telvision in a nice dry place. Not the best official end of summer weekend.

Saturday tried the point for a couple of hours midday and bad tide. Trying to teach my brother how to fly cast and fish at the same time. Got no hits and only saw a few small croakers caught by the bait guys. Water was dirty and the tide was still ripping from the near full moon tides.

Wind died down a bit and decided to go over to Cape May Point and check it out. Water was pretty high and a bit dirty with some weed. Saw my charter from the last two nights fishing there. (he had gotten a number of small bass there Thursday and Friday morning) He caught a few fluke and a small striper. I got a keeper fluke 16 3/3 inches on a yellow epoxy head fly using 450 sinking line. Only had 3 hits on the night.

They were the only fish I saw caught in the 2 hours I was there. Saw some bird play up a couple of jetties but was told by fisherman comining from that way that it was only small blues around 10 inches. I had fun and go a dinner to boot.
