Red Drum flats fishing
Well it dawned on me that it has been quite a while since I have posted a fishing report on SFC so with aching body from polling the boat all day and fingers that don't want to go where my mind says to, here is a short report and a couple of pictures as we fished in the rain, sometimes pouring to the point where I would have to pull off the bank and go drain the boat as the water collected all in the bow... Had the guys meet me this morningand hop into the "incognito" (my SUV) to head to parts unknown for some not so sight fishing today. Every one gets to our meeting point and the bottom falls out to the point, not just raining but a frog strangler with the boat filling up faster than it could drain out, not good was all that I could thing of, but the guys were hot to go so off we went, looking for another big adventure in the salt flats.] Arriving at the ramp and the wind out of the east, we headed to the first bay wherethe water was clear but the fish were to far in the grass and the guys never came tight in the first bay so we eased out and headed to the next one. Sliding the boat into the 8" of skinny water at a high rate of speed against the wind, I hopped on my perch and saw the first sign of the Drum just ahead of us, 5 casts later, Graham come tight with this little guy on Johnson Silver spoon...
As I was taking pictures in the drizzle, I noticed the weather, er rain coming down on us. I pulled anchor and hopped back up to see a nice school moving away from us. As we ease that way, I see one that is moving back toward us and I give Jim instructions as to where to cast and soon he is tight with a nice 26' fish. Anchor back out in hopes that the school moves back toward us as we land Jim's fish and take some pictures in the drizzle...
We move into the cove in hopes off cutting off the school when the bottom drops and the boat is filling up so fast that I feel the bow bump bottom with both guys on the bow and I know that we need to get to deeper water to get the boat drained. For the next 30 minuets, with both plugs out the water level inside the boat stays the same. With the wind easing some and the rain slacking off, I ease back into the cove in hopes of finding the school but it was not to be. We eased on down the bank and I spot a fish here and there move away from us but we can't get to them. I cut across a cove to the next point and once again I direct Jim as where I think I see fish and soon he is tight with another nice little fish...ah, life is good...
We work on down the bank with the wind picking up more and another round of rain pushing in and I make the move to another spot only to find that the wind has picked up more and polling the boat was not going to happen after the next 1/2 hour. Missing a couple of fish in this bay, I call it a day and we head back to the ramp to try it another day..
Enjoyed having you on the boat today guys, looking forward to the next time...
Nice job playing with the hand you were dealt. Picking out the pushes in those conditions shows you know your stuff Lee. And the smiles show the effort was well worth it.
