I live in Florida and the guys down here use fiddler crabs, steel leader and not much weight. You don't need a boat but if you have a smaller one to use you go right by the bridge pylons and drop straight down. You wouldn't beleive the size of some of them. Although you really call these black drum they are fine fair for the table. Any time I need a tip on catching these or sheepshead I just go talk to the black fellows down there fishing. Their quik to help and dang good fishermen. Hope this helps you out. And if you come down this way be sure to check it out under the bridges you might be surprised.
Any rod and reel that will hold enough 15 or 17# spectra and be able to hurl 2-6oz. lead. A fishfinder rig with a circle hook on about 18 inches of leader with a live croaker or mullet about six inches or so.
Find a bar with a cut in it near deep water if possible(near an inlet or creek mouth) and wait for the falling tide to sling baits to the hunting reds on the outer edge of the bar or in the cut.

A little more info on the type of drum fishing you intend would be helpful in order to provide you the targeted info ---
We do it a bunch of different ways, depending on the situation --- from the creeks to the inlet to the mild surf to the big surf on the banks --- from puppy drum to yearlings to drum ---
Generally when bait fishing it's a fish finder rig, from the 1oz sinker, 12" 20# leader to 3-5/0 wide gap hook or circle ---- to the 8 n Bait routine of the big surf/bigger fish on the banks consisting of 12' heavers, 20# running line, 50# shock leader, McMahon slider with 5 - 10oz sinkers, 3" 100# bite leader, 8-12/0 circle.
Flyrodders and lure chunkers are similiar to sp. trout fishermen with some popping corkers ---
Hope that helps !![]()
In the Pamlico Sound, fishing cut bait, this is the rig most of us use, also scaled down a little, works in the surf...

Here's a question for you. I can see fishing the egg sinker off the transom of a boat or in very slow moving water. However, in the surf, wouldn't it cause the bait to roll around too much?
Like if you want to fish a particular spot on the edge of a bar and you cast to it, wouldn't the current pull your offering away from the target?
Just wondering. It would seem a pyramid or bank sinker would be a better choice for holding the rig in a certain spot.
tunatamer4, sorry I missed your post, this is not a fourm I check as often as I should...
The one thing I like about this rig is that it allows me to "look for the fish" if I don't know where they are holding. If I want it to hod, I will go to a fish finder slider rig with a pyramid sinker on it. I also like the egg sinker for fishing flounder on the back side of the breakers as it will not hold and go looking for me...it is a rig that you have to hold and fish, not sit it in a rod holder and let "Rodnie" fish for you...
