Finally got to take the new boat out and do some fishing. With the nearly constant triple digit temp's, I wasn't overly optomistic, but, decided to venture out. Joining me Saturday was recently retired SSgt Tommy Smith. Tommy had worked for me the past 2 years before retiring and is headed down to FL to begin the next chapter in his life. We decided to run down to Lake Konawa Saturday morning at 0500.
Got the boat launched and started heading across the lake...hey Fred, that rod sure looks right nifty in the holder.
Slowed down and started marking fish. Konowa is known for Largemouth Bass, Hybrid Stripers, and a fair amount of Catfish. This is pretty much how the Lowrance looked all day long.
By the way...the 96.5 degree water was the coldest we found all day...worst was 99.8!! We tried fishing with Shad and Brim that Tommy had caught earlier that morning...no luck. Tried jigging some spoons...NADA. After a hour or so watching hundered of fish swim underneath us without even one hit, we pulled the anchor and started moving around. Finding fish was NOT the problem...getting them to bite was the issue. I notice a friend of mine who guides on the lake and headed in his general direction...dropped anchor 150 yards N of him in the "channel." Grabbed some bait and dropped it down about 18', slipped the rod in the holder and started to grab another rod to get it baited...as soon as I grabbed it...my clt_capt custom spinning rod doubled over, I grabbed it...fish on!!! Fought the fish for a few minutes and finally got it aboard.
This is a first for me...Tommy said it was a "Drum," I'm not sure, we took a couple pictures and let him go. About 10 minutes later, Tommy comes tight on another "Drum," little bigger this time. I had forgotten the net, and as I grabbed the line and reached down to grab him, we pulled the hook...I called it "caught" fish. After that nothing for the next hour. My friend had pulled up and moved to the S side of the lake, Tommy and I decided to do some drifting along the rocks at the dam...again, marked ton's of fish, but couldn't get them to bite. Finally, we saw a couple boats congregated around a cove on the S side and opted to venture over. Couple "old timers" in aluminum Trackers and a pontoon boat. Didn't want to disturb the locals too much, we motored past and set up couple hundred yards S of them in 14' of water. Bait was running thin, we had some cut Shad left over, so we baited up and dropped lines. I see Tommy's rod bow up and now he's tight on this nice little Channel cat.
About 10 minutes later I get another hit...play a little tug-o-war and another Channel cat goes into the box.
Ok...we didn't catch a bunch and we didn't catch my intended species, but, for our first fishing trip on the boat, and given the extremely high temps...well, I call it a good day.
