    Not catching report

Even though it was blowing 15-20kts SW, I needed a fix. I picked an area that would be protected from the wind on the lee side of the land. This area is one of my favorite shallow water trout holes. Met my buddy at the ramp and off we go. Get to the spot and start fishing. Saw a guy on the bank catch a fish and we eased toward him. Got close enough to cast with out messing the guy up. Both of us hook up. Cool, double header trout. NOT it was taylor blue fish.

I took my fly rod just because and even though it was blowing 20kts into my face I had to try it. Surprising enough I could cast into the wind fairly decently. While I couldn't cast as far as I would have liked, I was able to get my clouser out into the strike zone. THe problem was I was using floating line and only had a 4' long tippet. THe fish were at 7-9 feet.

I even tried to wait till my buddy hook up, and brought the fish closer to the boat and casted at the ones following the hooked fish but to no avail. I got skunked on the fly rod today.

However it was not all bad. I did manage to cast into a pretty stout wind and get the lure out enough to be effective. ( Thanks to OMC )

I have some sinking line and I think I will switch to that for the time being.

I'd call your trip a success. You learned something.

Your sinking line will help with casting in the wind. Being able to shoot the sinking line really helps it punch through the wind and out where you need it.

Don't be afraid to lower your casting angle closer to the water. It will help you stay low and the line will be less affected by the wind.

If you're casting in 20kts you're doing just fine.

    Craig... cool man..
Sinking line is a different animal all together. Google "water haul". Once you practice it.. much easier than floating line. Personally, I don't water haul much because I really enjoy casting and using a water haul is kinda "chuck and duck".. but.. it's very effective and easy to learn.

Are ya'll saying I'm going to have to relearn how to cast with the sinking line?

I guess I'll feel the difference when I switch.

    Thanks for the responses.
