hey guys , now we got the forum whats is your best memory with the fly rod.. ???my first albie was probably my most memorable aspect of fly fishing the initial run was unbeleivable the "oh sh!t" factor was incredible. the ohsh!t facor occurrs after you hook the fish and he puts himself on the reel for ya in 2.34567777--- seconds. it is heart stopping.. i got him in harkers island 2001.
Mine was probably the first fish I can really remember catching on the fly.
First trip of 4 to wyoming. First cast and down goes the indicator. A big old hook jawed brown and my dad and guide had already walked off. I guess just the Big Guy and I saw that one.
The second most memorable has to be the same stream but during hopper season.
Piney Creek...a private freestone that runs right through crazy horses old back yard. Chuckars on the hillsides, ducks swimming around, mulies and whitetails getting a drink, merriams chasing the hoppers too. ok enough blabbing.
We've been fishing for a few days and the hoppers are hot. Zane...the guide...ok not so much a guide as a friend who we had the fortune to fish with...he's moved on after some problems and I can't find him anymorebut anyway...Zane is the kind of guy that was more excited to hook a fish than the angler. He walked along the bank like a cougar sneaking up to a hole and would know every fish and where it'd be....He's like a normal version of the grizzly guy who got eaten.....anyway...back to the fish.
We sneak upstream, find a "teaser" and toss him into the creek....BAM there's a rise. Now this isn't just any rise...it's one of Zanes favorite fish a cutthroat in the middle of the prairie...rare!!!.
well a few falsecasts( ok not so much a few as WAY TOO MANY...anyone else have that problem?)....the hopper hits the water.....FISH ON....Zane yells pull him out it's not him....well one thing I do is follow orders well....long distance release!!!
we let things calm down and there's another teaser making it's way under the overhanging branches that are guaranteed to impede my cast. Slurp!!...there he is. Well I make a good cast this time and BAM!!!! there is...a few min later we're taking pictures and high fiving. So it's not time to call the record keepers, but it's a freakin Cutthroat in a prairie stream!!!
So that's good and all but the coolest part was about a year later. Same hole same kind of day, same little fish in the way...same Slurp and hookset....One thing changed....He was 2" bigger.
More pictures and high 5's went around and he was released to go back to his tree and continue to grow.
I fish saltwater with the fly rod all the time and specialize in Flyfishing and light tackle charters here in Cape May. It has been a long winter and looking forward to my first bass on the fly. Won't happen till April as Marinas and launch ramps will not open till Mid April. They are mostly indepentent an not geared for the benifit of the charter fleet. Till then I just have the memory of my last fish of the season on a fly along the rocks in the inlet.
Not my biggest of the year, but it got me through the winter along with tying a mess of flies for the new season.
All the marinas except one took out their ramps cause they didn't want the parking of cars and trailers. They take the chain off their ramp April 15th. They are building a public ramp so next year could be better, but it only will have about 15 parking spots. It will be a mad house during the season. They hope to have that one finished by April 15th. I have a slip at a Marina, but they don't let you use it till April 15th. Many of my big boat buddies face the same problem. There are only a couple of marinas that are open all year. Dockage is tight. Most of the marinas have waiting lists for slips.
