MHC cold water redfish on fire!

Unfortunately I don't have any pictures, but the redfishing off the beaches of Cape Lookout and Morehead City are as good as it gets. Site fishing huge schools of redfish with both fly and conventional has been just about as good as it gets. I fished Friday this past week and saw numerous schools of reds. At first you would get a bite or two out of a school of fish and then they would shut down. Water temperatures were around 43 degrees in the surf. Later in the day the water temps warrmed up to around 48 degrees and the bite picked up. By late in the afternoon the reds were chewing pretty good.

Saturday was even a warmer and prettier day, but unfortunately I had a previous commitment and could not go. I told a friend of mine that was going where I had been the day before and he tool advantage of the day and really cleaned house. The water temperature had risen to around 50 degrees and the bite was on!! He said that it was on of the best by far days of redfishing that he had ever had. Coming from another experienced redfish guide, this really hurt my feelings that I was not able to be there. Dozens and dozens of large schools of reds from 6 to 8 feet of water, to just inches of water with their backs out of the water were there for the taking.

The redfishing of this caliber should continue for the next while. I really depends on the wind. You need calm winds and seas to take advantage of this type of site fishing and to be able to get right on the beach without breakers taking their toll on you and your boat.
