Mark Sedotti Distance Castor At SJCFA Meeting

SJCFA members were treated to a presentation by Mark Sedotti. Mark is well known distance fly castor, fly tier and all around great fly fisherman. Last night he showed and made it look so easy how you can cast a super large fly (about 12 inches long) a super long distance.

He was casting it 150 feet with super accuracy and maybe 180 feet or better and making it look effortless.

It is all about loading your rod and letting the rod do the work. His mechanics are flawless. His distance casting was done with running line and a weighted shooting head and the demonstration was just spectacular.

To prove the point about mechanics, he picked a rod out of the crowd and was able with little effort to cast out the entire fly line with little effort and make it look so easy.

During our meeting he stressed how adding weight to flies and finding a balance can make for easier casting. Great open discussion while he showed us his fly techniques.

It was a great night to be a SJCFA member. It was worth a whole years dues just to attend that one meeting.

I was honored to take both Mark and Reggie out Friday evening for a fishing trip. It was the only night that mark was available to go fishing. We had very difficult conditions. Almost a duplicate of the trip two weeks ago when I took out Steve Croft and Joe Gerace, only it was windier.

Ken Kelly from the club was out in his boat Irish Fly with a charter and stopped by to say high. It was not a user friendly night at all. It was suppose to be 5 to 7 out of the west southwest but was 25 out of the southeast. We had the worst you could have. Dead low tide, brown water with a lot of weed and waves and wind.

I got to see first hand Mark casting into the wind with his large bunker flies like he showed us last night. They really looked super in the water. For those with snorkeling gear I know where a at least three of those big flies are along the rocks as the Jetty ate them tonight.

The plan was to use the big flies and go for big bass. Weather made that difficult at best. Mark was able to make great casts and he was working the big flies deep in the water column along the rocks.

Here is Mark intently striping in one of his big bunker flies. He found it comfortable at times kneeling down to strip in his fly.

After losing the third fly, he switched to a 6 inch white mullet pattern. Using this with the sinking shooting head he hooked up.

Was about a 4 or 5 lb. blue that got off as I was trying to get it in the boat.

Reggie was getting some hits using a small clouser and finally landed a small bluefish.

It was a real pleasure to watch a master fish and cast under difficult conditions.

The wind never let up very much even when the sun set. As the tide got higher we tried in the back for a short time and Reggie got a few small bluefish hits on a popping fly. Since they both didn't have dinner they decided to call it an early night.

Even though the fishing was slow we had a fun night, Mark and Reggie had some interesting stories and the night went by fast. I invited him back out the next time he comes down, with better conditions so he can experience what our fishing is really like.

Seems like yesterday but I guess it was more like 7 or 8 years ago when Mark and I were standing in a parking lot around midnight in Durham NC casting as the cops were wondering what in the world we were doing. they watched over an hour as we made cast after cast. Your right about Marks timing...flawless. Is he still doing the 150' back cast? Later that fall I had the pleasure of having him fishing with me for false Albacore at cape Look out. If you guys see him again, tell him that gottaflylee says hello.
    MirrOlure when big fish count!

Yep, still doing the 150 backcast. He shot one across the street before a car came by. Would of been real interesting if he hooked it up. He was heading back home last night as he had a demonstration in Central Park today. We are going to have him back down to our club to do a casting class. Not sure when.
