The Crew ..... Capt. Ike, Dr. Phil, All Day Ray & the ICM. Attended The Cape Fear Anglers meeting on Tues with Capt. Tim Barefoot as guest speaker. We wanted to test what we learned about anchoring, light lining & bottom fishing.
Well it all works, not exactly as planned. But the results are tasty.
We started out looking for Pogeys, had to run a gauntlet of Shrimpers all over the ICW. Every time we would spot of school of good sized baits , another Shrimper would run thru them. Gave up & headed offshore.
Get close to our first stop & put out "the Lost Sailor Special" a black Cedar Plug in white water. It never got hit but did raise a big curious Mah & he would not take any of our offerings ( those live Pogey's may have done the trick, if we had them ).
Drop the hook & start catching a bunch of small BSB, short Gags & a 35# AJ. That made so much commotion near the boat that we now have about a 50 # Cobia checking us out. If that Cobia got any closer & Dr. Phil would have free gaff him. This is not recommend !
Pitch everything we have ready at him, but he wants no part in this adventure ( those live Pogey's may have done the trick, if we had them ).
We did manage to hook a Mahi on our line line offering & a nasty Eel of some kind.
Fly the anchor a few times, catch a few nice BSB, Grunts, Ringtails, more short Gags & a few ARS ( released )
Move off to another spot. While the Capt & the Dr. are busy getting us anchored on the ledge, the help - All Day Ray & me, are pulling in the Cedar Plug, that raised a really nice Bull Mahi about 15 #. I grabbed the first rod nearest me, side under arm pitch it back to the front of the boat, a Purple Demon Catch 2000 MirrOlure & that small Bull is all over it - hooked up. He takes me around the boat 4 times & it's a walk around Grady, he's doing acrobatic leaps the entire time trying to throw the hooks & I'm just trying to stay on the boat. But he's mine & coming home with us. Then it happens he finds the anchor line, but misses it, instead he's under the boat, then on the other side of the boat & I'm on the opposite side with the rod tip in the water with a loosen drag, hoping he doesn't find the motors. But he does & it's all over.
So if anyone's catches a Mahi with a Purple Demon in his lip can I have my lure back .........
That dehooker I won the night before really got a work out , thanks Capt. Tim - Here's one of your jigs in a 26" Gag.
Saw 2 large Logger Head Turtles, about a 40# fish stealing Barracuda & only 1 small Shark.
Thanks to Capt. Ike, Dr. Phil & All Day Ray - always bring some live Pogey's & an extra fire starting device, it you plan on fishing with All Day Ray - he gets grumpy with out a smoke....... ICM
