MANY WILL NOT SEE THIS VIDEO OF STEWART AND CREW.....BUT GREEN DRAKE FLY SHOP WORE THE ASSES OUT OF SOME MAHIS ON DA FLY!
That is sweet. Couldn't help but notice the 80 and TLD at the ready for some univited guest.
Maybe even some tip of the week for having stuff ready when the unexpected shows up.
Thanks for the video Wahoonbox. Everytime we hooked up Wahoonbox was telling somebody to get the video camera. It was a team effort.
We had a ball and look forward to doing it again.
As far as technique, it wasn't too hard. Not much casting involved. Hookless teasers brought the fish in and we had our flies in the water and did our best to get close to the fish. If the Mahi saw your fly they ate it. Simple as that.
If one got hooked up usually there would be a couple more to show up and someone would cast to these fish. At one point we had three rods fighting fish!
Flies were pretty standard. I tied up a bunch of pink and white Half and Half's on 4/0 hooks. I used some long bucktails and kinky fiber with hackle to match.
Not much flash in these flies. I think too much flash can spook dolphin. I used big eyes and epoxied over the eyes to make a natural looking head. Pink/white, chartruese/white and lavender/white worked best.
Hope this helps!
Gottafly, keeping Rusty Berrier in line was a tough job on this trip. He is a damn fish hog. You know what I mean?
Jeeeez.... I give my left one for that size mahi to show up close around here. Awesome job capt, crew, and anglers... that is one nice mahi on the fly.
I'll tell ya drake, they can get real picky. I guess teasing them up, they are alreay hot fish. But man...sometimes we have to chunk them up and they get real smart real quick.
We use squid flies, all white decievers, poppers, polar minnows, and gummi minnows... all have worked when they get freaked.
