    Long distance casting help...

Hey gang...I finally made it down to the surf yesterday morning and before I even got a hook wet I was showing my fishing license to the Marine Enforcement officer...nice enough guy but darn can you at least let me get baited up first :P...anywho...mullet were thick in the surf and some small blues and spanish macks were ripping threw them...I managed one spanish about 2 1/2 pounds on a hopkins and 5 or 6 bluefish between live baiting and the hopkins...

What I would like some info on is casting a really really really long ways...the fish were in a frenzy more than once about 30 to 40 yards outside of my casting distance and I just couldn't reach them...if the mullet turned they were within easy reach but I guess they were herding them into deeper water as they looked to be on the backside of the first sandbar out...

I was using my 8' surf rod that is spooled with #14 mono as that was what I had...and I'm sure braid will help with the distance so I'm looking for a good reel/rod option...

I would switch to 15# PowerPro or any braid line. More line capacity, thinner then mono, more distance - might make the difference .......
You did mention Hopkins, is a good choice - maybe try a little heavier size ?.........
Getting in the water, up to your waist will shorten your distance, too ........... ICM

Have you Googled surf casting ?????

It's all technique and equipment. Good suggestions from ICM but you might think twice about taking distance casting lessons from a guy who has a blown up saltist for an avatar

If you really want to learn, check out the videos and instruction at :

well, first thing, thats not a saltist, thats 6500 ct abu rocket, but you get an E for effort.

i know tommy personally as well, he can defiantely get someone casting quick.

a good budget rod/reel would be some sort of tica , or perhaps a tsunami airwave in 9' size rated 1-3oz and a shorelure glass minnow in 1 or 2 oz. they throw sweet, and with some light 15lb braid it will get you wherever you need.

higher end you could go with a st.croix or lami + a stradic/sustain/stella w/e you choose.

Jesse - I count Billy as a friend and kid him about his 'highly tuned' abu all the time. I keep telling him to get a saltist 30H even tho he knows I own a dozen abu ctc3s ---
