    Lake Konawa Slam...?

Decided to recruit a few new members to Team Agitated and try our luck down at Lake Konawa again this weekend. Joining the team Sunday were Gary aka "Van Dam" and Jody aka "Lou Diamond" and my youngest Savanna aka "Striper Slayer." As his nickname implies, Gary is more versed in Bass fishing, Jody, being from MO is more inclined to fish from the banks of the river...so, trying to appease everyone's fishing styles was going to be a challenge. We got the boat launched around 0500 and went looking for bait. Bait today was much harder to find and catching seemed to be an even bigger challenge. Not sure whether the "peer" pressure of having a couple of my "boys" critiquing my technique or what, but, I threw more taco's than open nets...probably 6 taco's > 1 decent cast. When I did make a decent cast, everything came up extremely small. Oh well, made enough bait and then headed to the first spot. With a slight N/NE breeze I set up in the mouth of a cove and let the wind take us down the bank so Gary could get his "casting" fix. We stayed in the cove for a good hour and a half, covering both sides without a single hook up. As we were about to leave, I still had my Rattle Trap trailing behind the boat as I motored out of the cove and came tight on this nice Sand Bass.
At first I thought I hooked my elusive "Hybrid" Striper, but, under closer review, it is indeed the Hybrid's mother the Sandie.

We then moved over to the dam, marked fish and started drifting. Again, tons of fish on the graph, but no bites. Finally, I come tight on a 6lb Drum, not my target fish, but, they sure do put up a nice fight. About 15 minutes later Jody comes tight on a nice 3lb Blue Cat. For the next couple hours we went from spot to spot without any success. We had to get home early, so, we headed back to the ramp at 1000. Yet another trip without finding the Hybrids, but, another skunk free trip with some real good guys and one great little girl. Sorry, only one picture for this trip.

    Jesse,

Next time your up in that AWAC why don't you have them swoop low over the lake and use some of that fancy equipment to find those elusive hybrid stripers

Jay…tax payer money is misappropriated enough without me taking unauthorized scouting flights. I’ll get it dialed in…just a matter of time.

Congrats on a another nice day on the water with good friends. Your day is coming with your Striper. Have you tried jigging bait with a Sabiki rig yet and then slow trolling the bait like King Mackerel fishing?

Ok Lee, let me get a pencil and paper...this slow trolling you speak of, do you or Jay care to elaborate since I have never done it? I remember you made a comment in another thread about that type of fishing on the Kerr Lake...?? As far as the bait...if I went into the local Bass Pro and asked for a Sabiki rig I'd probably be given directions to the local Sushi bar. I'll figure the net out...practice, practice, practice...

No need for the big guns - a couple of flash-bangs will be adequate.

Glad to see that you are getting on the water regularly AND catching fish.

As for your trolling spread, a couple of daisy chain teasers, and just bump in and out of gear - just enough to keep your livies swimming

Ok, send me you address and I will send you a few of them I have a boat load and you and the kids will have fun catching on them...

Ask the locals if they have Blue Back herring on the lake and how they catch them.

To keep things simple, as Jay said, just put it in gear for speed. Where I use down riggers, just get a 16 and a 24 Oz banks sinker and a # 32 rubber band. Just let out 30 to 50' of line and loop the rubber band around the sinker and then to the line and lower it to the depth you want (I will post some picture if you like). Run 2 rods down and 3 up.

Go to where you mark fish and start. You can't cover much ground this way so you will have to pick ares that you think they will be in. If you think the boat is going to fast, a 5 gallon butket will slow you down, rope it off to your stern cleat and and toss it over, short to the boat. I perfer to troll side to or down wind when I troll.

No doubt Fred, it's been great getting back out on the water. Between my inexperience with this "type" of fishing/conditions and these extreme temp's, the fishing has been tough, but, fun none the less. Plus, I have a couple guys interested, so, it's only going to get better as we get dialed in.

Thanks for the intel Lee...no down riggers, but, i'm sure i can come up with a rig that will produce the same effect. Of course pictures would be appreciated. I haven't used the bucket in 30 years...we used it when trot lining for crabs back in MD. My boat is way too fast...probably average about 3.0 in idle...so the bucket and bumping will be necessary.
