KICKED SOME BASS BUT NOT ON THE FLY

Kicked some bass and took some names this morning, but not on the fly. Got up this morning and the wind was already blowing pretty good in the tops of the trees. Had a father and his 11 year old son plug fishing. Last year at the same time of year they had nice blues and a 39 inch striper.

With the forcast calling for heavy north east winds I brought some clams and clam bellies incase we would have to hide in the back some where. Left the dock at 5:30 and told them the blues had been real small and bigger bass have been hard to come by.

Headed right out to the inlet and worked the rocks. Same area that we worked yesterday with fly charter and couldn buy a bite. On the 2nd cast the father got a keeper striper and son got a 3 lb blue as I had to pull away from the rocks to net the fish. Just must of hit it at the right time. The tide was just starting to pick up and with the heavy, waves and wind blowing it was hard to control the boat where we needed to be.

Pulled back up and the son got a keeper bass and the father got a blue. Action was good for about an hour until the wind kicked up to around 25 mph.and the waves were too much for us to handle. Had 4 keeper size bass with the biggest 31 inches. Blues ranged from 1 1/2 to 3 lbs.



Worked the leeward inside wall of the jetty drifting back with the tide catching a couple more blues. Even had two on one plug. First of the season.

With the wind really blasting we looked for more shelterd water to work. Hard to find any we worked flats area and picked up a couple of bass to 23 inches on popping plugs. Even with the electric motor it was brutal trying to control the boat where I wanted and my boat has very little windage.

They were going to release all their fish as they were staying in a motel for the weekend. I kept a fish for myself and one for my dad and we released everything else. Not a bad day on a nice but very windy day and I got some fresh fish.

Cleaned the bass and they were loaded with calico and green crabs. No signs of any bait. No wonder they were anxious hit something big. Hope some of those bigger fish around for my next fly trip.

Couldn't repeat it this morning.

Had a charter this morning with guys that couldn't cast at all. Lucky there was a lot of blues north of the inlet marked by lots of bird. Had three anglers in the boat so we trolled three lines. Must of caught about 30 blues, and cut and retied the lures at least 7 times as they kept tangling them up. Would of liked to try for some bass this morning, but with no casting skills at all, it would of been impossible and I would of lost a ton of lures on the rocks.

Decided to chunk in the back with the incoming tide. Caught one throwback bass, croakers, throwback fluke and tons of sand sharks. Beautiful day but a lot of work and the boat looked like I was in a slaughter house.

There was lots of bait all over the back when we took the short cut through the back. Even the marina is now loaded with bait so the fishing should turn on soon

John, slow start to the week. Was away Monday, High winds Tuesday, Small fish Tuesday night, and just small blues this morning. Lot's of bait around but the fishing is less than usual. Think the back should be good when we get the better tides.
