Went sea duck hunting today in the hazy Chesapeake.
The ducks were slow(3 in the first hour) and birds of a different feather were flying.
I broke out my 8 wt w/ my Rio Lake line and caught at least 50 fish on a worn out rattle clouser tied on a gami jig hook. The same fly has accounted for 250+ fish this year. The flash is gone, the epoxy is yellow, the bucktail is stained, but it's still catching. The fish were all 15-20 inches and were feeding on bay anchovies or some other small baits.
The old man was still having fun even though he was fishing with "devil stick"
I let him catch one on the fly, but he didn't like my constant casting instruction, or that very thin lake line.
The fish were stacked up and the fish finder was lit up all day long.
Maybe I will have to take up hunting! Guys are duck hunting in the same areas that I fish. Only we do not see any activity like that. Looks like you switched gears and made a great day out of a bad day for hunting. Next time you have to go fishing and take the guns along. Nice report.
It's funny, the second we started fishing....500 yds from the decoys...the guys just down from us started shooting quite a bit. We were happy to stick with the fish.
There were a few keepers in the bunch. The 3 of us kept one each, and I'm headed to the dinner table to enjoy them.
It's good to be able to post a catching report every once in a while.
Last week I did the same thing, but didn't do as well b/c I was using a spinning rod.
When the fish are on the small bait 1-3"....Fly rodders RULE!
There are quite a few boats like mine in MD now. I passed one on rt. 50 on Tuesday, then got a call a little while later from a buddy who said he just passed me. It wasn't me he passed.
I'd say there are 5 boats like mine in MD and a few on the way.
