I bought the scout costa 170. I hope to have it by july 4th and already Im thinking about a trolling motor for it. I didnt get it factory as its all new to me. What ideas and suggestions might some of you guys have? If you know me, you know I like the sneak attack. 24 volt.....12 volt? pedal, throttle? any other ideas. Im going to add it this winter. I bought the boat loaded without that one feature because I really dont know a thing about it. thanks,
Mike is dead on the right advise for your new ride. At least that what the Carolaka guys will say!
I'm not a big fan of the remotes 'cause as we all know, the more that can go wrong, the more that will go wrong at some point. That said, they are sweet when they work. A longer shaft will keep you from bending over so much to adjust speed or steer.
check out sea dek non-skid - soft footed - closed cell foam - stick down stuff. great for not slipping and easy on your feet! good luck with the boat and many good days.
thanks, It makes more sense now. Also, I watched a guy fish for reds with jose this morning on tv. He seemed to have a hand throttle but I guess the foot control is an option that can also be used? I still dont understand what an auto pilot would do but, I will learn Im sure.
Alex,
I was on the freshwater bass tournament trail in an other life and I have had pleanty of experience with trolling motors in this application. As far a hand control v. footcontrol or autopilot, it is a matter of preference and what yhou get used to. I fished mostly big water (by freshwater standards) and tidal rivers, and started with foot controls but switched to hand control units. When you are fishing all day and there is a chop it is tiring as hell standing on one leg trying to steer with the other and balance with the other. With a hand control, you will quickly get the hang of bumping the steering with a knee or your hand.
One thing that all of us that used hand control (steering) units liked was an on/off button mounted on the deck. This way you simply mash the button with your foot and go back to standing with both feet on the deck.--- they are not hard to find.
On the other hand, when trying to manuvere in a narrow creek, it is nice to have the precision of a foot controled unit.
One thing I would recommend is get more thrust than you think you'll need. Nothing worse than not being able to keep up with the tide on a windy day.
Minn Kota Rip Tide SF. If you can stand the weight look at the 101# of thrust. I believe it is a 36 volt system (that's where the weight comes in) I had a Maxxum bow mount on my old jon boat the foot control takes some getting used to. I think you have more control with the tiller. Composite shaft is wonderful, just snaps back in place. Here is their site. minnkotamotors.com/products.
Congratulations and best of luck.
got a 36v riptide hand control in the skiff, itll do about 6kts in to the wind. downside is that 3 batteries weigh a ton. i would think the foot control would only be really nice if you sat down and fished like bill dance.
