    Advice on Cleaning Reels

This may be a good place to start. I can't really help because I have never been too good at cleaning my gear after a day of fishing, but I'm trying to learn.

It really depends on the reel and depends on how I fished the reel that day. If it is a reel that uses a bushing like the Ross Momentum, Canyon, etc. You can just soake the reel in the sink for about ten minutes.

If the reel has bearings like Tibor, Abel, My reels, etc. It is best not to soak the bearings. Just a soaking under the tap will do just fine.

Don't make the mistake of blasting the reels with water when you get home. That will just drive the salt farther into to backing.

I also like to put a little puff of CRC into the drag knob and under the drag SS plate just to keep the clicker pawls crisp sounding.

Once a season I break all of my reels down and clean them. Put a little bearing grease on the 2 way and clutch. Not a lot of guys bother to do this. I think it really keeps the gear working perfectly season after season. Also nice to know how your reel is put together. Fly reels are not complicated. It's a nice thing to do when it's snowing outside.

    Hope it helps...Tight lines, Bob

Definitely no water pressure - I usually use pledge wipes to clean the reels and rod guides - every other trip or so I use light oil on outer moving parts - once a year dissemble, clean and lube inside

Mine get heavy use. I was them down after every trip and then to a good clean up and lube at the end of the season or sometimes mid season if time permits. They seem to all be holding up well.

Personally I still have two old Okuma reels. The finish never held up. They work great but look like hell as the paint has blistered off them. Use them when I jetty fish. That way I do not have to worry about scratching them up on the rocks.

    JAKE!!!!
Be very careful cleaning that fin nor bud. 100% cork drag... You need neatsfoot oil if you are going to use anything at all directly on the cork.
Otherwise.. just wash it off with water and let it dry.. try not to let sand get in there either. If it does, just take the reel apart and lightly pull the sand out.
