Good Spanish/Blues Fishing In Morehead City, NC

Was only able to get out Sunday and Monday. I had a blast trolling for Spanish and Blues. It was especially enjoyable as I was learning how to do this for the first time.

Sunday: Trolled all the way up to the Cape Lookout Shoals from Beaufort Inlet. Only one Spaniard to show for it. Switched one of my lines to Yozuri Crystal Minnow. Then it was game on with the blues. I also caught a nice Spanish on that lure inside the hook.

Monday: Couldn't pay a Bluefish to bite that minnow again, but I had all the Spanish I could handle on both gold and silver Clarkspoons.

All fish were released to fight again another day.

Nonfishing report: I ate at The Crab's Claw restaurant in Atlantic Beach. The service was a bit slow (forgivable, it was a holiday weekend) but the food was OUTSTANDING. I recommend the Tortugas Crab Dip appetizer. I also had the Harker's Island clam dish. Both were excellent.

Regards,
Bri

spurge0n,
First, welcome to the site. Great first post and looking forward to reading more...
Couple of things that may help you out...
When Spanish fishing, this time of year, start with 00RBM spoons, I like to use gold one on cloudy days or when the water is dirty. When the summer goes on move to 0RBM spoons as the bait grows.

Also, when trolling them, I will keep 1 on top, 1 on a 1&1/2 oz bead-chain weight and 1 on a #1 Old Salty planer. I run at least 30' of 30 pound mono from the planer or bead-chain. Do not use fluorocarbon as the Spanish will eat the knots...

Keep us informed and always feel free to post questions...

nice report.

we were out at lookout today looking for cobes, stayed in tower alot today, saw nothing...nada..zip...didnt see any other boats hook up either.

decided to salvage the day and throw the clarks over and get spanish in the box..had a very steady and consistent pick of spanish, only ran 2 rods, one up top, and one on a #1 OS planer. had a couple doubles.

better then sittin at work!

Sea Draggin: Thanks for the welcome, it was nice fishing with you last year.

gottaflylee: Thanks a lot for the advice. I never thought about trolling a spoon on top, but I think I'll try it. Is that "Old Salty" planer you're talking about different than the SeaStrike?

Jesse - good to hear that the Spaniards are still out there. I might try for cobia this weekend.

Bri

Either one will work OK in the #1 size. One trick I do is to make a chain of 3 little ball bearing swivels in a row, connected with split rings that come off the back of the planer.

You can use 15lb mono with no twisty at all. I got a limit for our charter on Saturday morning.

Welcome on board spurgeOn,
Good to see you fish in an area my boys and I love and still have lots to learn about. Pulling spoons for those spanish and blues is a great way to enjoy a morning.
Thanks for sharing...
