Put some friends from Saltwater Marine ( Mark & JR ) on some Reds yesterday & they out fished me with Gulp on a 1/4 oz. jig head - 15 to none ....
And I refused to stoop that low, stayed with a Nemire Ripper, gold spoon & SkitterWalker top water - did manage 1 monster Pinfish on the top water ...... ICM

Billy, sounds like you got into a school of them, just guessing here.
I use the spoon as a "locator" lure, something that I want to cover a lot of water with quickly. I retrieve it quick enough to get a reaction strike out of, I don't want them to get a good look at it.
Now let me see...you said you used a "Nemire Ripper", if I remember correctly, that is a bigger spoon with a plastic trailer and maybe a rattle, good dirty or rough water spoon but not something I want to throw into a school.
Remember I always say "KISS". I stick with the Johnson Silver Minnow spoon, no trailer as it cuts the spoon's action down and I can't retrieve it as quickly as I would like.
In your case, the Drum got "keyed" in on a bait, I'm guessing the "Gulp Shrimp" and a spoon or a top water will not do the same thing. I think you could have got them on a "Thump Bait" like I talked about in an earlier thread
...
Oh ya, the picture...

Capt. Lee ........ The Nemire Spoon has a really nice side to side wobble action ......... Does have a rattle & is not any bigger then a Sprite ........
The water was light coffee colored, almost the same color of sweet tea & calm conditions - fished behind an island ....
Will have one rigged next time, thanks ....... ICM
