Fluke and Croakers calm night on Pink/white clousers

Got out tonight with Jay and his mom Cathy form, both members SJCFA. Jay wanted to take his mom out for a birthday treat as she is really into the fly fishing.

Left the dock at around 6:00 p.m. It was really hot at the dock and felt good to get out on the water. We tried a spot in the back bay on the outgoing, trying for a bass or a blue. Never got a bite, but saw a some rays and a couple of fish break water.

Moved to the beach front and found 66 degree water and nice an calm conditions with nice clean water. Jay and Cathy were using intermediate and sinking lines with pink/white clousers. Cathy got the first fish on the fly. A nice 19 inch fluke.

Action was a bit slower than other nights with a few more throwback fluke and some nice croakers. Jay got his first croaker on a fly and was impressed with the good fight they give.

I was throwing a small jig head with berkley Gulp white mullet and was getting some croakers and fluke including one keeper. As it got dark we moved to the bridge shadow line with 61 degree water, where Cathy got a small blue. Didn't seem to be much bait or activity. There wasn't much current yet and we called it an early night. They were fun to take out on such a beautiful night.

I know Lee, His boat is Chillin Out. We keep trying to hook up and fish together but it is tough. He is mostly down on weekends and I am usually out with charters. His boat is too big to fish the areas that I fish and mine is too small to fish where he does. With the lack of bait around there are the usual bigger bass around. Just got to fish for what mother nature gives you. Croakers, weakfish and fluke are providing pretty good action. Waiting for the tides to be better in the back to work the stripers again as most charters don't like to fish the good tides in the middle of the night.

    Tried to duplicate last night.

Had a free night and wanted to get out and get some keeper fluke for some nice dinners. Gave fly fishing buddy a call and we left the dock at 4:00 p.m. It was brutally hot and hazy. Decided to try the back where we tried the day before. Third Cast on a pink/white deceiver on intermediate line I got a 17 inch bass. We worked the area hard for about an hour and I got a 12 inch blue on the same fly and we both missed a few small blues. With it being super hot and lots of greenheads and black flies we decided to hit the cooler waters of the ocean.

Went to where we were catching croakers and fluke yesterday and it was 68 degree water and very very slow. We couldn't buy a hit on the fly and the water looked great. I was harrassing buddy the whole time saying I got the bass and the blue for a inshore grand slamm and that all he had to do is a get a fluke and weakie. I picked up the spinning rod and used the 4 inch mullet gulp baits and started catching croakers on about every cast. We knew they were there, yet we could not get them to take a fly.
Out of frustration I took this picture of his catch on the fly and kept telling him he need a pink/white fly to catch..

He changed his fly (not to a pink/white) but to a big oversize green/white/yellow clouser and caught a throwback fluke. I went back to the fly rod and we worked our butts off but could not get another fish of any kind.

Decided to call it an early night, but tried the north side of the north inlet jetty. We found 5 nice pods of bunker there in 63 degree water. Live lined a medium bunker with no action while Pete flung the fly. Nothing ever bothered the pods so we were back to the dock at 9:00. One of our slowest nights with the fly in a while and it was still super hot like an oven when we got back to the dock.
