Flies for ROOSTER and WAHOO
Hey Guys
I am hoping you can help me. I am planning a trip to central america next year and hope to run into some Roosters and possibly wahoo.
I need an idea as to what baitfish are the most prominent on the pacific side and which flies are successful at catchimg roosters and wahoo.

WHILE I AM NO FLY EXPERT ONE BIT...I WOULD THINK A CRAB PATTERN ON THE ROOSTERS WOULD BE AWESOME....KNOWING HOW AND WHERE THEY LIVE.....
AND MSITER WHOSKI...........DUDE......A PIECE OF FLASH INSERTED INTO ANY FLY WILL INTICE THIS MEAL....................I BELIEVE HE WOULD EAT A SHOE IF IT HAD FLASH ENHANCED SHOESTRINGS ON IT
LOOK FORWARD TO YOUR STORY ON YOUR RETURN ....AND WHERES SIKORSKI AND CAPE MAY RAY WHEN WE NEED THEM?

Roosters and Wahoo...hmmm
Can't say I've tried, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night
Well the Wahoo is a tough target with the flyrod, Marty is right, flashy streamers are the ticket. Like many of the bluewater species you might have to get them into a frenzy with live baits and try and fool them with a fly. The sea habit series of flies by trey Combs are popular pacific patterns. They're essentially a simple streamer with an epoxy head.
Epoxy heads are nice for toothy critters. I like to add eyes to all of my flies too. Many predator fish key in on the eyes.
Definitely utilize synthetic materials for the hoos. They will shred any natural materials you throw at them.
The sardine is the standard bait on the central pacific coast so any pattern from a 2/0-6/0 in 4-6 inches should work well. Blue/white green/white pink/white chart/white olive/white red/white.
The roosters are in the jack family and like a fast strip with any standard baitfish pattern. THINK INJURED BAITFISH. The sea habit series will work well for them too, but the standard clouser, half and half, or deciever is just fine too. Don't forget their cousin the Crevalle. He's a worthy opponent too , just doesn't have the whacky hairdo.
Heck most of the SW flies out there are tied using the same techniques anyway...call it what you want.
Here's a standard shape and size. the colors are up to you.

remeber a chart/white 2/0 clouser will catch almost any species of fish in the world, no need to get too darn fancy if you don't want to.
Have fun and post a report when you get back.

MOST IMPORTANTLY.....DON'T SKIMP ON THE HOOKS. WHY SPEND ALL THE MONEY GETTING THERE AND OUTFITTING YOURSELF THEN USING A CRAPPY HOOK. OWNER, GAMAKATSU,VARIVAS.....ETC. STRONG AND SHARP, YOU WON'T BE PLAYING WITH GUPPIES OUT THERE.

I'd check out some of Bill and Kate Howe's Flashy Profile flies for Wahoo.... These are very variable patterns which can be adapted to colour/size etc, but with huge amounts of flash, and have been evry succesful in targeting Wahoo in the past...
As to Roosters.... I think it all depends alot on just where exactly you will be fishing...Matching the hatch is always a good idea, but going up a size if bait is plentiful, this'll get your fly more attention form the roosters....
A Sar-Mul-Mac is a reknowned Rooster pattern...Large surface poppers/Gurglers or Creasef lies will attract them from a ways off too, and induce leg numbing chases and takes hopefully.... If you are fishing from the beach, everything I have heard is that Rooster fishing is all about speed. Cast fast, and strip even faster....so a pattern that tracks well at high speed is defintely preferable.... I think Flashy Profiles should fit the bill here too.

So, you think you want to chase Roosters on the fly!?
I tried once in MX. Let's just say permit are like bluegills on a spawning bed compared to these guys. Check out this vid for some good input, at least on level of committment required. Hell, maybe I should say committal, as in Looney Bin!
