With the weather nasty the last two days, it looked pretty good today. Got down to the dock with a plug fishing friend around 10:30 near the top of the tide. Water was 46.3 degrees and wind about 12 mph.
Headed to the inlet and found the water there and in the ocean very brown. Much worse than it was on Saturday and it looked like coffee. With all the rain and high winds the last couple of days it really stirred thing up. Chartreuse fly could only be seen 6 inches under the water.
We worked it hard for awhile and could not get a hit. We checked up the beach and no sign of birds so we decided to work the outgoing tide in the back bay. Found the water there not much better than the ocean. As we got to the back it clouded over and with the wind it felt pretty cold.
Could not find much tidal flow, even at the normal spots until the tide was out quite a bit. Finally we hit on area where I caught a bass and he caught 2. My buddy got the two biggest on a plug.
With the water so brown and the fishing so slow we called it a day and went in to warm up and get some lunch around 1:30.
Ending my charter and personal fishing for the year tomorrow when I pull the boat for the season. Usually leave it in till the weather forces me to take it out, but had to get my ducks in line before Christmas
Back in September at my yearly checkup I found I had Prostate Cancer. It was caught early so getting it removed should take care of the problem with little chance of spreading. Got my surgery scheduled for next week and should be in one day and out the next be feeling pretty good, but not allowed to do any heavy stuff for awhile. Only negative is that it will take a few months or better to regain full bladder control and get back to normal. (In time for the 2009 fishing season)
Hoping for a great end of the season trip, Peter and I decided to get a last personal fishing trip in today. It was suppose to be light winds and sunny.
It was sunny 41 degrees when we left the dock and about a 15 mph wind and pretty cold. We headed to the inlet where we found the water as bad as yesterday. Ugly brown along the beach and around the inlet. 46.5 degrees. We worked it for about and hour and headed to the back looking for cleaner water.
Found cleaner water and the same water temps, but the wind was a bit of a problem. We ended up working a deep creek to stay out of the wind. We were both using chartreuse flies on sinking lines. After about an hour Pete got the first hit and hooked up to a really nice fish and was fighting it for a while and it just came undone.
Worked the same creek for about another hour and Pete got the second hit of the day and landed a nice 22 incher.
Early afternoon the wind started to die down and we moved to a couple of other spots. Here Pete had another hit and a fish started, but again it got off.
All day, I never got a hit. Same fly and rig that I have been catching on all week and not a dam hit all day. Fishing was really slow at all the major hot spots.
Not the way I wanted to end the season. I always like to end on a good note. It just wasn't to be, but there is always next year!
The last two days we had slow fishing and I noticed we had very little tidal flow both days which I believe was the main factor as to why the fish were not feeding as well. Looking a the tide tables I noticed both yesterday and today the height of the high tide is at its lowest of the month which means tidal flow will be at it's slowest.
We had a cold fun day and at least Pete kept the sunk off the boat. Tomorrow is a no fun day. Pulling the boat, pressure washing and getting it put away for the winter.
hope everything goes smooth ray!! you will be back and slammin those back bay bass before you know it.. have a wonderful winter and happy holidays my man!!
Thanks for the well wishes. I am confident everything will go fine I will be in good shape for the start of fishing next year. Got the boat pulled, washed and ready for winter and I am all set.
Hope everyone will get out and catch a few fish so I will have some pictures to look at while I am cleaning fishing gear and tying flies.
I am doing just great. I would be out fishing as I feel well enough.
Still waiting to read and see reports from you fliers that are in action. TOO MUCH CHRISTMASS SPIRIT! (or wife saying you are going where) this close to Christmas.
