    Mrs. Capt-D, Liam and Avery!

    First attempt this year!

Had a couple hours yesterday (Sat) after I sending time at a builders auction in Harford County to wet some flys. Fished the Patapsco just under the dam in the put and take area (my buddy didn't want to make the run up to the Gunpowder). The water was wicked high and very turbid. Fished some nymphs and streamers with no luck. Water was just way too high. At least I got some casting in to brush off those winter cobwebs. Might give it another try at the gunpowder next weekend if the weather cooperates and the water levels fall a little.

It is going to snow maybe on Wed... I can go in the afternoon pretty much any day. Barring today... I only have my 7 wt in the truck (5wt at home)and the waders at the house. Maybe Thurs? Should be sunny at least after the storm...
    All bucks... no females yet.
Capt-D.. Big hunting creek will produce better than 99% of the streams after a significant rainfall. It is catch and release only (thank god)... but there are some serious bruisers and stream bred browns. Anytime it rains and I want to go trout fishing... BHC.

Big Hunting is the one in Catoctin right? I haven't fished there since I was 12 with my dad. When I fish it is usually Gunpowder, just because I always know what to expect and where the holes are that have produced for me in the past. Perch? You aren't talking the spring yellow run in the eastern shore already are ya?

    Dave,

I dabble a little, nothing to serious. I haven't ever gotten to the point where I'm tying yet(even though that I have two unopened beginner tying kits at home). I usually trout fish during the winter months, especially when there are warm afternoons and I can steal away from the honeydoos.

BHC... yup that's the one. Fantastic fishery.. basically two different rivers. Above Camp Penial bridge, slow meandering creek...below the bridge, plunge pool after plunge pool and tricky hiking.
Gunpowder is great!! I love that river!! But when it rains and you get the itch, BHC is the place to go. Slam dunk in the winter too. It won't take long to learn the river.

I am talking about the yellows.. Cold as all holy hell and not on fire yet but they are showing up....

Which Bridge is the Camp Penal Bridge. Is that the access road into the park about halfway up the mountain?

Have you ever fished above the reservoir or in the town of Thurmont.

I also remember my dad taking me to a small creek just north of Thurmont past a high school.

When you make the right turn off route 15 and leave the town of thurmont, you pass frank bentz pond... a little ways up is the first bridge, that's penial. The next big stop is the main rangers station.
I think that small creek might be Owens?? Nice little rivers too...has a bizarro population of clear/orange fresh water shrimp...
