Got a call to wet a hook this afternoon from my buddy Phil, sure grabbed a few bugs and new MLure that I just knew would be the hot bait! Got to the ramp before lunch and headed to Bay River and set up where we had caught fish during the Shriners Tourney a few weeks ago. Boy was it slow, alot of boat traffic and a netter came up and left. Things settled, with 2 bugs out we waited for them to get hammered and we waited, waited , waited, well you get the picture, time to move. I worked the new ML 17MR EGBG, with out a nibble as we worked the creek, water was very clear, finally I switched to a ML that had never been opened, S38MR MG. First cast let it sink as we were in 15ft. of water, twitch and BAM! nice fish on, short fight and a good 3lber in the net that literally inhaled the ML.
Phil sticks with his Yozuri 3D, which has put alot of specks to the boat the last 2 weeks. He gets a nice 1.5-2 lb fish quickly, the bugs still haven't been hit. We move to another hole and the first bug goes down, another nice 2lb. fish on ice. I pick up a baby speck maybe 10in. on the biggest bug in the live well Pretty slow so we move down river and try working some pot lines and Phil gets the tiny fish of the day award, a 7-8in. sand perch on the 3D.
Sun starting to set and we don't have but maybe a hour before we are going to the dock in the dark. Move to a open water spot, 7-9ft. and send a bug out and we work the marsh and open water with the stick baits. I get a good strike on the ML, cast again and hook a good fish and the bug come tight at the same time Release the cork fish and Phil nets me another nice 2lb. fish, now we have fish tearing up bait all around us. I manage a couple more fish on the ML and finish with another on the bug bait. I'm sure we could have sat there and limited out but sun was on the horizon and we got to the ramp as it disappeared. Finished with 6 fish, biggest 3lb., released another 10 or so. I'm starting to get the hang of the MLures, Lee!!!
