any suggestions on flies for dolphins.....
With chunks of Bait? come on. You hardly need to use bait to get those eating machines to bite. Any fly will work. Trolling teasers and switch baiting them is fun and effective. more big fish that way too. We do it on charters all the time. Now is the best time of year to do it.
jake, have some smaller flies such as surf candies too. dolphin around here can get extremely picky...
Jake, my 2 cents. Best thing I can tell you on this is...have a large selection of colors of fly's when you get into a "bailing" situation with Dolphin as well as poppers. Dolphin will catch on to the game in a short time and you will need to change colors often. When they quit wanting to play go to your poppers, that should get them going again and you can then go back to non poppers again. I usually start with red and yellow when bailing and also with bait and switch on the troll.
One more thing, most of the time the "Big Boys" will be down deeper...carry a heavy led line with you to get down to them.
Good luck with it. Best day I had was 30 out of 36 on fly...wish I had that on tape.
Squid chains and strip bait with sea witchs as your left short and long. Little chuggers work well in front of the strips too. I like to use the stips so the fish can tug on them and get a little taste. Once a dolphin starts to chase a bait, rarley we he give up till he gets it. if you are a righty fish with your right rigger up or the port side rigge for those of you who were confused. That way you can cast easier. I am sure the day you try this if other boats are catch nice gaffers trolling, you will be plenty succesfull bait and switching them. Good Luck!
When we are doing the run and, gun thing around the weed lines I like a yellow popper with brite red kick feathers. When site casting to them try a hot poink seaducer with a led core line. The faster you retrive the fly the more they like it. Just go have fun with them ,they are a hoot on the long rod!!!!!!
