If y’all remember back in June Captain Lee graciously donated a full day of inshore fishing to be auctioned off for the Barta Boys and Girls Club Tournament. I lucked up and ended up the winner of that auction, Lee and I talked back then and decided to wait till fall for the trip and yesterday was the day. I asked Wiley, an old friend of mine to go along.
Scheduled pick up time was 7:30 AM from the Bridge Tender Marina in Wrightsville Beach, Capt. Lee was waiting for us and ready to roll when we go there. A cold front had slipped thru and the temp had dropped a bunch overnight - we were in for a cold run down the waterway in the skiff.
First stop Lee had us on the bait and one nice flatty was on ice before long. From then on we had to work long and hard for every fish, seems that that cold front instilled a case of lockjaw in South East NC. We did manage to pick away at them all day and can definitely say that the lack of weight in the fish box was not caused by lack of effort. The good Captain busted his kiester for us all day.
I have had the pleasure of being on a boat with Lee a couple of times and it is like going to fishing seminar every time, it is a true learning experience and he is always willing to share his knowledge.
We ended the day almost 12 hours later with a couple of the prettiest flounder we have seen in a while and the satisfaction of spending a day on the water with some good friends. Almost forgot to mention the sack of Lee’s own recipe sautéed shrimp that he brought along for lunch – good groceries!
And yes flounder will hit a MirrOlure.
